Hey,all-
Just got a Samsung MiniDV with AV in/out so we can convert all of our Hi8 tapes before selling the old camera. We started by following the directions and were able to capture part of the video. Suddenly, "Copywrite protected" flashed across the screen and it refused to record any more. This happened just after we turned everything off to make sure it was recording (it was). It wouldn't work on restart.
We tried re-recording some things that had previously recorded (didn't work). We can't get anything to record now. It just stops almost immediately and flashes the "copywrite protected" across the LCD. We didn't change any settings when we stopped the first recording before attempting to continue.
Any suggestions?

Get a new camera. That screen only comes up when you attempt to put a macrovision signal through the AV inputs. You're going form camera to camera correct? Cameras don't have macro output circuitry. So either your Samsung is malfunctioning or you're fishing for a solution to copy something you're not supposed to. Either way it doesn't matter to me personally. Soooooooo....if you want to get rid of macrovision there are various macro elimination boxes out there and Im sure you could find one for cheap on Ebay. Most are called "Video Stabillizers"
Look, let me explain something. I'm not Mr. Lebowski; you're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. That, or Duder. His Dudeness. Or El Duderino, if, you know, you're not into the whole brevity thing-- -
Many new video cameras especially from Sony have also so called macrovision watermark detection.
If you were trying to make on screen recording ( in cinema for instance ) the macrovision detection circuit can detect watermark put on the projected video and camera will refuse recording. Human eye can't see this watermarks they only can be detected by dsp based pattern recognition. I wonder if this techniques can be or is used on TV broadcasting?
As for Video stabilizers I would personally recommend red pro for capture and dvd recorders -
Nope. Nothing with Macrovision or Copy protection of any kind. Just home movies. That's why it was so weird! I guess we'll have to contact Samsung. I assume it would be the DV Cam and not the Hi-8 that's causing this problem, right?
Thanks guys! -
IMO Just because it's not copy protected doesn't mean that your cam is detecting it as it is. I had simialr problems trying to capture home movies with a ATI AIW and a Geforce VIVO card.
Here's two examples from my experiences, all are using the same hardware with the exceptions noted. With a cheap capture card with no MV detection the tape would capture fine but at the expense of quality. With the Geforce I was able to capture using the newest drivers with the addition of a Sima GoDVD or using older drivers that had no MV present.
What it boils down to is with the advent of high quality consumer products that can make nearly identical copies of tapes they are trying to prevent the average joe from being able to easily make copies of commercial movies. Just like that old quote "locks keep honest people honest". Unfortunatley this also affects the average joe trying to copy personal movies that may not be of the highest quality. What's probably happening is your tape has a weak or bad signal and it is being detected as MV because that is exactly what MV is a video error.
Try a video stabilizer it will probably work.
