I'm looking at flat panel monitors for a system that i hope to build in the next few months, and i was wondering if i should go for TFT or LCD. Ive noticed that most flat panel computer monitors are TFT, but Ive also seen some LCD 'TV's' where it is claimed that they can also be used as computer monitors. I'm interested in this because of the inbuilt TV tuner. So my question is, which technology is best for a computer monitor? By the way, I mainly want it for DV, DVD, and games...and Word/Internet!
Thanks!

Um, TFT (= thin film transister) screens ARE LCD screens.
Your poll doesn't make too much sense.
There are many different LCD technologies though.

CRT all the way. TFT are LCD. If you want cool looking, space saving then LCD is a good choice. But if you want useful, CRT is way better.

Yep, returned my $400 LCD for a $200 CRT that's bigger screen and better performanceOriginally Posted by Conquest10

Multiple resolutions with CRT! Besides, it helps heat the room on cold winter nights.
And CRT is cheaper. Priced any 21" LCD's lately?
I have a 15" LCD monitor, I wish I could afford a 21". -
CRT for proper colours and no lag in games! ever try playing Doom on a DSTN screen?
-
I play games on my Sharp LCD monitor - no lagging. It behaves itself very well in video playback, too.
LCDs over CRTs anyday. Much nicer to use. -
Like the LCD / Plasma technology... will probably be my next buy... but in the winter nothing better than a 200 watt heater in my computer room from my 19" crt.

I got an 15" LCD and a 19" CRT Trinitron and I like them both !
I like the LCD better though because it looks cool. -
Ok I get it, so TFT is a type of LCD technology....CRT's are cheap but I think I'm gonna go with an LCD coz they look better!

Look better, cool wow factor or look better, colors and performance?Originally Posted by kazzer

Its cool wow factor. There is no way an lcd is going to compete with a crt. Maybe the $1,000+ lcds but you can get a crt for $200 that's better.Originally Posted by stiltmanHis name was MackemX

Not to mention dead/stuck pixels and burn-in.Originally Posted by thecoalmanHis name was MackemX

Anyone else here in the LCD camp??? LOL
Come on I need convincing! Im sick of this bulky beige monstrosity on my desktop! -
LCDs don't burn in, do they? I didn't think that they could, because of the way they work.Originally Posted by Conquest10
You sound like you've already made your decision. I haven't looked back since I switched to my TFT, and my father bought one a week after seeing how nice my monitor was. Definitely a sound investment, expecially now that they are becoming cheaper.Originally Posted by kazzer

I think the controllers can become faulty so end up with the aforementioned dead pixels, although this seems to happen to ALL lcg screens across a long enough time scale. when i was looking at screens before i don't think i found one with a screen lamp life longer than 10,000 hours, that'd probably be just under three years for meOriginally Posted by Cobra

Hmmm, it's interesting. I hope mine's stays pixel-perfect - it's on 12 hours a day, and my father's is on 24/7!
Eh? Is it just me (or the alcohol) or was that post totally random?Originally Posted by Shocker Milwaukee

Come on, a debate over TFT & CRT? This one was decided before you even posted. If you have more money than sense, buy a TFT.

Yes, it was random. Yes, it was the alcohol. But, I'll still love you in the morning. If God had intended us not to masturbate he would've made our arms shorter.

I can do better than just describe it:

I was on the bed, right up against the corner to take those shots. Agreed, it isn't tiny but it's small enough to warrant an LCD over a CRT for space issues. If I had a CRT, I had to have it over on the right-hand side of my desk, so I had to sort of straddle my tower PC in order to use it. It wasn't comfortable.
Plus, I find LCDs to give a much nicer image - I don't have much of an eye for colour differences as most people, but it's definitely sharper and has none of the curvature distortion that my older 17" CRT had.
