  1. Or very dull, loss of color etc. I'm processing vob files at dvd resolution down to 512 x 336 using the divx3 mencoder at 1200kb/sec which is higher than the "best" bitrate. I'm also going from 29.99fps to 25fps.

    Thoughts?

  2. There should be few reasons to still encode to DivX 3, as ffmpeg mpeg-4 and XviD are way better.

  3. My 400mhz laptop cannot play back that resolution of mpeg4 file without significant frame loss, but it can play back divx. I am not familiar with Xvid, is it very common?

  4. What do you use to playback? It should be VLC or Mplayer to go faster. Yes, XviD is very common.

  5. I have used both mplayer and vlc and I find that vlc plays back more smoothly on my computer. Unfortunately it cannot play back mpeg4 encoded files as well as divx, even at the same bitrate. Is this normal?

  6. I've been thinking about your comments regarding mpeg4 being so much better than divx. So I did some research on google and found some links indicating a 400mhz computer should be able to play back dvd resolution mpeg4, UNLESS it is a laptop which usually has smaller caches etc. But even so, the chart indicated a 400mhz computer would use 80% of it's cpu playing back the mpeg4 file. So I thought maybe I should give it a try again, perhaps I set the resolution too high on my previous attempt.

So I set everything to an identical setting as I used for divx, but specified mencoder mpeg4. I'm very pleased to say it plays back nicely I do lose frames, but it is usable.

The picture is sharper than the divx version and there is no "cloudiness". The color is very washed out though. On my laptop lcd screen it looks great, but on the tv it looks washed out. My laptop has an svideo plug on it, is there anything I can do to improve the look now? Thanks for any input.
