  1. 1. Start avi2mpg2 and immediately click "Start encoding"
    2. Click "settings"
    3. Click the "input and output files" tab
    4. Try to use any of the buttons

It just closes, no errors or anything - just dies.

Has anyone had success getting bbMPEG to work in Windows XP?

    Yes.
    To fix this 'bug'.

    Load bbMPEG.
BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE, HIT THE LOAD ON THE MAIN WINDOW.
    THEN CLOSE THE DIALOG.
    Now resume as normal. =)
