I understand it is possible to add subtitles to a movie while at the same time converting it to (e.g.) DVD or SVCD.
I like to try to diminish unnecessary lengthy testruns, so that't why my question.
If I use titlelab to create a file that can be read with QT, can then that same file be used with FFmpegx and (especially) will the timing be identical as to when if I had done the merge with QT?

You can directly add a .srt file in the Filters tab (remember to select "Decode with mplayer" too) without need of merging them on a Quicktime file first. If you want to test, use the "Preview" button at the top of the window to see the result without waiting for the encoding to finish.
