    I beleive I have finally decided on my software of choice.

    IuVCR for capturing since VD is not an option with XP.
    PicVideo compression
    AVIsyhtn/VirtualDubMOD for filtering and cutting and so forth.
    CCE for encoding.

    I've read about AVIsynth being faster with YV12 color and some about a mpeg2dec file to help? What is the story with YV12 or YUY2?

    I am currently capturing in YUY2. Should I change that to YV12? What is the mpeg2dec3 file for AVIsynth do? I want to make sure I have the fastest and most effecient setup before I dive in and do 21 tapes!

    Thanks,

    LS

  2. The mpeg2dec3 if for reading dvd2avi .d2v files when you are opening VOB files w/ avisynth, since you are dealing w/ an AVI, you can ignore it.

    I dont get your comment about not being able to capture w/ VD (I assume you mean VirtualDub) in XP. I do this all the time.

    I found that AVISynth works faster then frameserving from VirtualDub, so I always use it.

    I capture w/ YUY2, I remember reading that it gives some of the best results for picture quality.
    Ejoc's CVD Page:
    DVDDecrypter -> DVD2AVI -> Vobsub -> AVISynth -> TMPGEnc -> VCDEasy

    DVD:
    DVDShrink -> RecordNow DX

    Capture:
    VirualDub -> AVISynth -> QuEnc -> ffmpeggui -> TMPGEnc DVD Author

    XP uses WDM drivers and VD requires VFW. I have not found any drivers that will allow VD to work and allow the Tuner portion of the card to work.

    It'll work, does for me..

    YV12 will get you speed, but i believe YUY2 gets you a tad bit better quality. But try to capture with either uncompressed YUY2(not an option for many), or Huffy in YUY2 colourspace...

    Formula:
    Uncompressed YUY2+352x480 capture+AVISynth+CCE+DVDLab, produce the fastest and best results..
    I can encode 1.5x realtime on a crappy P111 1ghz..

    I believe YUY2 is a better capture colourspace than YV12. Not sure of the speed difference though....

    I bought Ivan's capture program myself and used it for a while, but I gave it up in favor of VirtualVCR. I don't know if he's changed anything about in the last year or so, but I kept having audio synch problems when I'd capture stuff with IUVCR, and the dynamic resampling option in VirtualVCR solved that problem so I quit using IUVCR. Really nice program though, save for the synch issue.
