I was wondering which dvd recorders regardless of format have the best picture quality in the 4, 6 and 8 hour modes? Thanks in advance for any information.

Best 4-hour = LSI encoder chips using true VBR specs (JVC is the winner for the best machine using that spec)
Best 6-hour = This is tricky. You need a machine that does an adaptive deinterlace. Not a field drop. The spec of 6-hour is always 352x240, normally bitrate of 1500 VBR/CBR/CVBR. The LiteOn 5001 (maybe 5005 also) seems to do this. Again, LSI chips, although CVBR, so only 1-hour, 2-hour, and 6-hour really look nice. So does 3-hour, if you get no jitter problems from the firmware hack. The 4-hour is okay on cartoons sometimes. Most machines drop a field, and that looks horrible. In PAL, some Panasonics look decent at 6-hour too.
Best 8-hour = None.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

It would depend on what you are recording.
Dvds are cheap enough these days that you can buy more rather than trying to stretch what you can put on it.
