Yep, yet another damn video format which refuses to do bugger all on my PC!

    OK

Installed Matroska Pack Full v1.0.2 - surely that's all that is needed?

Result of playing 'sample' mkv container file:
    Matrix.Reloaded.Trailer-RV9-Karl640x432_HE_AAC_subtitled_chapters.mkv
    from:
    http://matroska.free.fr/samples/matrix/

    is..

    Media Player - fail - there's a surprise!
Media Player Classic - Fail (with relevant filters enabled)
VirtualDubMod - Fail - Parses file but can't save as AVI (direct stream copy) - then couldn't locate decomressor or format 'yyyy' unknown
GSpot - not a valid AVI

    blah blah blah

Therefore in my mind - can't play it because container class MKV not supported - BUT appears to be installed.....

    any ideas?

    Thanks in advance,

    Andy

  2. There is a RealMedia file inside - RV9. I think you need some codecs for RealMedia files.
Better download Xvid mkv sample from the same site and try again.

    .....or install the dreaded RealPlayer!!!!......Aaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!

By the way, Media Player Classic doesn't require the Matroska Pack to function. It has the Matroska Splitter filters built in to it, as well as Real Media Splitter (not the decoder), and even AAC decoder (doesn't seem to support HE-AAC - go with the Core AAC filter).

    Does Real Alternative support RV9?

    Codec are NOT a problem.

PC does not recognize the fact that an MKV file is a video stream container!

    Cheers

  7. Can you play ANY Matroska file (*.mkv's without RV9)?

Some of the other samples there ( http://matroska.free.fr/samples/matrix/ )
do not contain RealVideo, do any of them play?

    With Media Player Classic?

    What OS - Win98/Me?

I've seen a couple of posts in the past where people on Win98/Me had trouble with the Matroska pack. Someone suggested that the Matroska filters used in Matroska Pack might be Unicode, therefore incompatible with Win98/Me.

I believe that the Matroska Splitter filter download at Sourceforge contains both Unicode release (Win2k/XP), and regular release (Win98/Me).

    Hmmmmm.

The most BORING thing that can happen when trying to solve a problem on a PC is when 'suddenly things start working'. More to the point it sounds lame & that the user does not know what he / she is about....

Yep, the damn thing suddenly started working (well, kind of) & I have done NOTHING to my PC...

I use WinXP on a 3GHz PC. I have installed unicode version that is relevent to XP.

    New problems...

The Matrix.Reloaded.Trailer-640x346-XviD-1.0beta2-HE_AAC_subtitled.mkv test mkv file plays but at doulbe speed, sound shagged (obviously).

GSpot still does not recognize the fact that MKV is a video container just spits out 'not a valid AVI file'

Finally, what is HE_AAC version of ACC & where to get it?

    Thanks so far,

    Andy.

    Update...

TheCore Media Player plays the movie perfectly! (still don't understand why it has suddenly started working).

GSpot, VirtualDub etc. don't recognize MKV though.

It appears to me that I have half a solution installed on my PC. Certain programs accept the stream, others do not. I therefore belive that (as far as my system as a whole is concerned) that it still does not 'understand' MKV containers.

It seems to me that each indiviual program needs tailoring (via plugins / mods) to make them accept MKV. To me this is unusual!

    Cheers (again)

    Andy.

The CoreAAC filter should already be in your system if you installed Matroska Pack Full.

Media Player Classic has a built in AAC decoder but it can't handle HE-AAC. If you uncheck the box in Media Player Classic "Options" it will make use of the CoreAAC (that seems to play HE-AAC)

I'm not surprized that Core Media Player works fine, it probably "prefers" the CoreAAC filter over any other.

Yes, that is exactly the reason, well done guys. More people with a knowledge like you guys have, and my job would be a lot easier
