The programs I use to convert avi -> DVD are TMPGEnc and VDUB (to frameserve with subs). I use TMPGEnc DVD author to auther the dvd. Until now i used fixed subs in the mpeg file (with vdub frameserver).
But now i want to make a dvd with switchable subs like a dvd you buy. I tried ifoedit to mux video, sound and subs into an ifo file but then if i use tmpgenc dvd author with this ifo-file to make the menu, i can't select the subs anymore in my dvd-player.
Does anyone have any suggestions to make this work or how i can do it? (I don't want to buy any additional authoring programs)

you can't use tmpgenc dvd author. but you can use dvdauthorgui! freee but not as simple as tmpgenc dvd author then.
