Just over a month ago I have bought a spindle of 25 DVD-R from TigerDirect. The first 10 were OK, the next 13 in a row had a visible surface defect which extends from the center to the outer rim. When you try to burn a DVD on it, it gets ejected after a couple of minutes with a message "Tracking error".
The label says that defective DVDs can be exchanged at an authorized retailer. I checked TigerDirect return policy, it says:
SOFTWARE AND CONSUMABLES (TONER CARTRIDGES, INK CARTRIDGES AND ****DIGITAL MEDIA*****) ARE NOT RETURNABLE. (emphasis mine)
They do not even specify the type of a defect.
Plus more than 30 days have passed since I ordered them, the time limit for exchange on ANY products.
So now I am stuck with that junk.
If I make 3-4-5 DVDs per month, it would definitely take me more than 30 days to find out if there is defective media, especially if those are at the bottom of a spindle.
So I had it with buying media through mail order and I also had it with ProMedia.
Makes you wonder what kind of quality control procedures they have if they allow a product with a visible surface defect, with an area of almost a SQUARE INCH to be sent to a retailer!

You could try going direct to the manufacture and see what they have to say.
Never know they might replace them as a good will gesture. Not bothered by small problems...

Write it off to experience. I got stung with some Sonics too before I found this site. Get Prodisc from Supermedia, they give a 180 day return on defective product and they run about 37 cents.

well this is all very interesting.
I have used promedia -R and sent the resulting dvd's to the UK and got rave reviews of stability and quality.
Now........., my experience with using different encoding and burning software is that, never have anything else running-nothing.
I use Windows movie maker to capture with a ADVC 300, encode and edit/author/burn with Tmpgenc express/author.
I do not get on well with Nero, it does not seem to like Tmpgenc results-I think.
Look at my PC specs for any other info, I use a LG 4082B burner.
I wonder if bad results are due to poor encoding software eg: straight to Mpeg, and impatient computer users.Great DVD's take time--ask my cat.
PAL/NTSC problem solver.
USED TO BE A UK Equipment owner., NOW FINISHED WITH VHS CONVERSIONS-THANKS -
Thanks for your replies, guys! I agree that I should have visually examined each DVD, that defect was visible from BOTH sides. I just did not expect to have 13 of them in a row. From now on I will be doing visual examination right away and I will also stick with brand name media.
As far as my capturing, encoding authoring, burning software goes, I do not think there is any problem with that. I was using Mitsumi and Memorex so far, there was not a single defective DVD, not a single coaster before I tried ProMedia.
