  1. I have a movie which (I think) is in SVCD format. I have another one which is in (I think) VCD format. The SVCD movie has a folder named MPEGAV which has the file AVSEQ01.DAT. The VCD movie has a folder named MPEG2 and has the file AVSEQ01.MPG.

My standalone player playes the movie which contains the AVSEQ01.MPG just fine. But it will not play the AVSEQ01.DAT. Is there an easy way to convert the AVSEQ01.DAT movie to AVSEQ01.MPG? I know that the .DAT can be played with just about anything on the computer, but I want it to be able to play on my standalone.

I've searched the guides to no avail. Please help a desperate NEWBIE

VCDGear is what you're looking for. You can download it here:

    http://www.vcdgear.com/

It's very easy to use. Just load the dat file and convert it to mpg.

  3. I've tried that. But when I went to convert it back to bin/cue, I opened up the bin with IsoBuster, and it was still a .DAT.

Should I not be trying to convert it back to bin/cue after I convert the .DAT to .MPG?

Go to the green "all guides" section (over there <-<-<-) click on format conversion and select SVCD to VCD. Lots of guides on the subject.

I've never been into SVCDs or VCDs, but I know that SVCDs are MPEG2, whilst VCDs are MPEG1. That way, you can tell that your first movie, that plays on your standalone is a SVCD and the other one is the VCD.
Usually, standalones can handle VCDs and have trouble playing SVCDs but your seem to be a different story.
Search the guides for ''VCD to SVCD conversion'', or convert your .dat (MPEG1 file) into MPEG2, using Cinema Craft Encoder or TMPGEnc and tha appropriate settings for SVCDs.

  6. It is the opposite. MPEGAV->DAT is VCD standart, MPEG2->MPG is SVCD. Strange that your player play SVCD, but not VCD - usually it is otherwise. There is a way, but maybe not so easy. When you extract the mpg from dat, remultiplex it in TMPG as SVCD and author the file in VCDEasy - that is how I would do it. BTW there is a chance that the video in dat is actually mpeg2. You can try to look at the files in TMPG-Simple demultiplex. If the video has extension m2v it is mpeg2 originally.
