  1. what's the header trick?
is it worth doing or is it a shortcut that has flaws?

  2. Yes its worth doing header trick but i suggest you try that trick on whichever file you want and burn it on to a cdrw, see if audio/video is proper and then burn it onto a cdr

  3. I believe that the header trick is when you take an MPEG file and alter the information about the file to "trick" a DVD player into playing an SVCD standard video as if it were a DVD. SVCD is not a DVD-legal resolution, which makes this trick necessary.

As far as I know, this is a technique that works very well and has no shortcoming other than the requirement to do a little more work. I am reading this guide:

    http://dvdlab.net/dvdlab/tutorial/svcd.html

...but there are a few others, one of which I do remember investigating.

I am currently watching some of my SVCDs that I created back when I didn't have my DVD burner. I want to make more - the quality is almost DVD, to the point that friends believe the video is actually a DVD playing.

If your SVCD files are encoded at 2500kbps - more than adequate for excellent quality - you can fit four hours on a DVD.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow morning, purely because I'm interested.

EDIT - You can also use the header "trick" to make a DVD player that does not support SVCD (but does support VCD) play SVCD by making it think that it is playing a VCD.

I gather that the search feature is disabled on your computer ???

Go to the "All Guides" section to your left:

Hit Ctrl + F, type in "Header", and press search:

    Read about it.

    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. i did'nt know i could press ctrl + f and search for guides!
    why is'nt it mentioned?
anyway i was looking for a way to put SVCD mpeg's into tmpgenc DVD author without having to encode them.
so if i use the header trick it will save me having to encode but although it's on a DVD the standalone player will recognise it as a SVCD?
this will be no good to me coz most of the stuff i make i give to my son to play on his playstation 2 and this does'nt recognize SVCD's
anyway with mainconcept i can encode an hour of video in about 40 mins.
    was just curious.

Because it's a standard Internet Explorer function, not anything specific about this site. Pull down the Edit menu and see the "Find (on this page)... Ctrl+F" selection. Many other programs support the same keyboard shortcut.
