proxyx99, thanks, that does look like a nice test pattern. I assume when you say Ulead, you mean VideoStudio? If so, I'm not sure I want to plunk down the $100.

However, thanks to gshelley61, I found that I do have the THX test stuff on my kids' Ice Age DVD. I did a bit of testing with it the other night, trying to decide which of my VCRs does the best job of recording. I might have to start a new thread on that topic.

  2. Great, glad I could help. The THX test patterns don't tell the whole story, but will reveal any distortions and flaws that may be occuring when processing or recording a video signal. Plus, they are very helpful for setting up your monitor/home theater display.

Oh, don't forget to rip a backup copy of the test patterns sequence with DVDShrink or something... they are copy protected, so you can't record them right off of the Ice Age DVD. Running the patterns through a TBC or other copy protection defeater adds another layer of processing to the video signal.

Another way would be to import several BMP's into your video editor (like the one I posted) make a few min. avi and mpg with pattern changing every 30 sec. or so coupled with some high quality video material that may be found on demo discs by Sony, Pioneer etc. that is used to show plasma TV capabilities. If you need a test bmp file PM me.

Good idea. Thanks again the info on where to find them. Had it right under my nose and didn't even know it!

Actually, I have already done some searching of the web for test patterns to do something along the lines of what you are suggesting. I just haven't gotten around to it yet. But it's a very good idea.

OK...I have one last screen cap to post. This one comes from the Mitsubishi HS-U781 that I had in the master bedroom. After setting the "perfect picture" to edit, I like this more than I originally thought. Not quite as sharp as the Panasonic, but close, and a little less noise, I think.
