  1. Hello,
I am new to the fourm and had a couple questions on how to get going with transfering my home movies to my computer. I was wondering what kind of capture card I would need to not lose quality(Good Brand and Model), I will be using S-Video.Also, will that same card bring my audio in also? Also, does it matter what program I use to edit? Can I just use Windows Movie Maker or is this not a good program(I do not want to lose quality but need it simple enough to use).

    Thanks
    Josh

Try a few searches under Guides and things below: ...

    * Search Guides, before you jump right in :P

..and select the "How To Catagory". From there, you'll probably find what
you're looking for. Many years of people's how-to's can be found there :P

You can also find an article by Satstorm for newbies just starting out

  3. Are you looking for a anologue card? Or digital? If you are looking for a anologue card i recommend Leadtek WinFast vc100. I use it, its around £20, and is great quality for old VHS tapes. with this card its easy to hoop up to yours camera with a 3 way phono lead.

Camera- yellow and white GOES INTO sound card and capture card

Ulead is also a very basic proggrmme that comes with alot of cards. If you are looking for more advanced editors trys Sony Vegas 5, or Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5

Personally i use Ulead for capture, Premiere 6 for editing.

You are from USA, so I guess you are NTSC.

    Go buy an ATI card.

    @josh,

1st ... let's assume you have VHS or Hi-8 home movies. If you have D-8 or miniDV ... we'll you don't need a capture card. If you have Hi-8, you might want to just look into getting a Digital Camera.

If it needs to be simple ... find a DV capture device. An analog card does not do the audio. Most any PCI card (on a modern cpu) is fine for capture. It's the software that matters.

Here is an example of a DV capture device.

If you give more details ... so will I.

  6. I am trying to transfer SVHS video from my home camera. My camera has an S-Video out and rca audio out. I am looking at an ATI 9200 All-In-Wonder, does anyoen know if there is any difference for video capture between that one the 9000 and the 8500. I dont need a good video card all I care about is the quality of the capture. Also, for programs I need something simple to use but I do not want to sacafice quality since I will be putting them on DVDs.
    Thanks
    Josh

    ATI + NTSC = www.digitalfaq.com

The best source for ATI stuff, from an NTSC point of view

If you really want an ATI all in wonder, the Hated Mod is quite correct. LordSmurf has mucho experience with those.

    Cheers

Yeah ... VCDHelp is my home. I was learning the development stuff at Doom and others for a while. But I've become re-interested in DV.

Ever notice how the mods here are mostly non-us, but there is a lot of NTSC talk? No forum for us US guys to not get confused about our shiny new hardware ...

From what I know, the members here are 40% North America 60% Rest of the world. But somehow, North Americans manage to show themselfs a lot more than the rest

VCDhelp has many sections, but the real advance ones are few and with low traffic.
It seems that we have guides for almost everything here, also most of the questions are answered. You do a forum search and all the answers are there...
That explains why off topic section is so popular those days.

I remember the old good days... xSVCD use to be voodoo magic back then...
