  1. Hi,

    I'm a bit of a newbie. A friend and I have been debating the the quality of the video when converting the original .avi capture. Is it best to convert the .avi first to dvd (mpeg-2)? Or is there video degradation or lossiness, if I convert the .avi to mpeg-1, then later convert the mpeg-1 to dvd? Or is there no difference which route to take the .avi and mpeg-1 and dvd do not lose video quality when converting between the 2?

    I use TMPGENC for my conversions. I am converting a VHS tape, running through a JVC S9500U > stand alone TBC > Datavideo DAC-100 > Adaptec 4300 > Scenalyzer

    Convert as few times as possible. Convert from AVI to DVD MPEG-2. Then author the MPEG-2 file to your BUPs, IFOs, VOBs. Burn these to DVDs.
    Hello.

    It's best to use the original AVI for the conversions.

    If you want to create mpg-1, go avi-->VCD
    For mpg-2, go avi-->DVD/SVCD

    Try not to go avi-->mpg1-->mpg2-->mpg1-->divx-->whatever
