I know this is probably a stupid question but I am very new to this aspect of video. When capturing to my hard drive, is it best to capture in .avi format?

Actually, the best way to put VHS on your hard drive is a process called transferring, where you convert the video to DV AVI and transfer it via firewire to your system.
