Help please, i have a plextor 708a and it burns at .6 - .7x on 4x verbatim datalife plus. What is going on??
The drive is set on secondary master
I dont know how to check for DMA mode because im using win2k
Specs:
Windows 2000
P4 2600 HT
512MB DDR
PX708A
Verbatim 4x
DVD Decryptor to burn from IMAGE

ok it sounds like DMA is OFF. Here what you need to do:
1- click on control panel then to system.
2- On the hardware tab click on device manager
3- under catagory IDE controllers make sure each channel has DMA enabled if not then remove that chanel and restart. DO NOT REMOVE THE CONTROLER. REMOVE THE CHANEL ( either "primary IDE channel" or "secondary IDE channel"). I repeat not the conrtoler. if you do so you will miss up your system.

Thanks dude, i checked at its in PIO, in the process of burning right now at a groundbreaking speed of .8x!!! after its done i'll fix, restart and let you know, thanks again

Thanks pete, it works!!! i put the writer on max and i writes at 8x. It doesnt work, but i think it has to do with the software rather than the hardware.
Do you think writing at 8x will wear out the drive quicker? -
i don't think it hurts if you burn at the drive top rated speed. I will just make sure the media is 8X compatible.
