LiteON Standalone DVD Recorders Making non-compatible DVD

I just discovered that LiteOn DVD Recorders are not making compatible DVD-Video format from the following threads:

Though all my DVDs made by the Daytek (LiteOn clone) playable on all of my DVD players, it really surprised me that audio from LiteOn recorders are not DVD-compliant!

It might be irelevant to general consumers who did not edit/reauthor the recorded discs. Future buyers should know this before making a jump!

yeh i noticed that too after buying a LiteON LVW5001B from Currys in the uk.
it was £149.99,supposidly half price(orig price £299.99).
upon getting it home,the first thing we noticed was a french manual,not english.
also it seems to be the audio that causes the problems,on my other players,so i stuck in a brand new +RW and it isnt fully compliant.
i placed this dvd+RW in my pc,and ripped it,then tried to use dvd-lab to try and make a new one with menus.
2 warnings came up,1 for the video not being compliant ratio,and the second for the audio not being compliant too.
so back this POS goes,in about 20 mins,when the wife gets home.
i notice too that currys had a toshiba rear projection tv also in there so called sale,but after checking it out on the net,it turns out to be a french model too,a sort of cut down 42" non progressive scan tv.
it looks identical to mine,but only has some of the features.
i thought of checking on it as i thought i might have been ripped off and was amazed at there price.
they were passing it off as a 42" rear proj,progressive scan widescreen tv,turns out its only 42",100Hz,and thats it. but it uses the same code though.
anyways,just checking now and can get the Liteon5001B for 175 euros online,thats a lot cheaper than "half price".

Support for MPEG 1 or 2 Audio is part of the DVD Video standard for PAL/SECAM TV areas and optional for NTSC areas.

Any DVD Player sold for use in PAL/SECAM areas must support MPEG 1/2 Audio to get a DVD Video logo. In NTSC areas the support is optional but will likely be included as they all use the same chips these days.

AC3 is left out of the Lite-On to save some licensing costs as previously mentioned, with mono tuner support being either a bug, or again a cost reduction exercise, you get what you pay for.

So it actually IS DVD-Video compliant, just that those people who live inNTSC land may have standalone DVD players that do not support mp2 audio as it is optional there. Should not be a problem in PAL Land.

I used LiteOn 5001 for 6 months. Their video fomat is always DVD+VR, which should be the same for all +R recorder. To make the disc editable, it is impossible to be completely DVD-Video compliant which is linear non editable. But I have no problem at all to reauthor the discs using TMPG DVD Author and convert them to DVD-R.

Regarding the audio format, they use MPEG-1 layer 2. They can not use PCM which occupy too much space. My other recorder JVC DR-M10S only allow PCM under XP mode. To avoid paying royalty for AC3, they use MPEG-1 layer 2 which is not part of the DVD-video standard. But since it is part of VCD standard, it should be playable in almost all the DVD player you can find. The editing programs I used, TMPG DVD Author, Moviefactory, neoDVD etc all recognize MPEG-1 Layer2 without any problem. In fact the programs I used so far few of them can deal with AC3.

I have a panasonic DVD recorder that records in DVD-Video mode on DVD-R discs and in DVD-VR mode on DVD-Ram discs....The DVD video dics play fine in other players.

The audio is 2-channel AC3 unless u specify using PCM (you can only use this in 1-hour recording mode).

See my previous post. Mp2 audio IS part of the DVD-video spec. Its just that support for this format is optional in DVD players in NTSC areas.
