  1. I'm trying to find a method to backup DVD9s to DVD5s, my main issue is that all the mainstream tools seem to be absolutly terrible. Both Nero Recode and DVD Shrink rip threw the isk in about 20-25mins and yeilding something that makes something that is clearly inferior to even SVCD. I know that there's not much space, but even at 3700kbps DVD video shouldn't look like the pixely crap that the shrinkers are yeilding.

I'm trying to find some guides for a more manual approach, what I'd like to do is re-encode the video streams from the vobs using Tmpgenc. What I'm having trouble with is finding the correct tools, I need to find a tool that will easily merge and split VOBs as well as multiplex them back together once a new video stream has been encoded at a lower bitrate. Little help?

  2. Just use DVD Rebuilder. Does the encoding and preparing and saves you a lot of grief, all while producing a wonderful end disc.

  3. DJ_Izumi, out of curiosity, what was the compression used by DVD Shrink?
Also, did you make a movie-only or full-disc backup?

  4. DVD Shrinker was doing about 55% and I was backing up the entire disk, menus and extras and all. The end result was video at about 3700kbps and it looked terrible for that bitrate in comparison to what Tmpgenc can yeild at that bitrate simply by truely re-encoding. Don't make me post comparison images. :P

Edit: Great, DVD Rebuilder dosn't support multiple angles and this DVD has multiple angles for the purpose of bilingual opening and ending credits. Now I have to figure out how to remove one of those angles. |:

  5. Shrink has questionable results with 65-70%, let alone 55. And with some movies, even 75 looks kinda nasty.

  6. So clearly, the software is inferior.
