  1. This is so frustrating. I have tried 5 times to back up Along Came Polly. The first time I just used DVD Shrink to shrink and burn. Near the end of the movie, everything pixelates momentarily and then freezes completely. I checked the original disc for smudges or scratches. It is a flawless disc. It plays perfectly in my DVD player.

I tried ripping the DVD to my HD with Decryptor and then using Shrink to shrink and burn. Same results as before.

Finally, I thought there might be a problem with the burning feature in Shrink. So I used Nero 6 to burn the files that were output by Shrink. Same results again.

I tried burning at 2X rather than 4. No dice.

I turned data verification on in Nero. It tells me that anywhere from 1 to 3 files are inaccesible.

What does this mean, and how can I fix it?

    Thanks

Check to see if DMA is enabled and try better media.

  3. I'm sorry, but what is DMA? What does it do, and which prgram should I disable it in? Thanks

    direct memory access=dma

It allows your burner to access ram directly.

Go to your start menu----->settings----->control panel------>system----->hardware tab----->device manager---->IDE ata /Atapi Controllers------>right click primary ide channel------>select properties tab------->advanced settings tab------>under transfer, it should say Dma.

Hey rock. This is a quote from another post involving enabling DMA.

Check it again, if it didn't stick, you'll have to uninstall the channel and reboot again. Windows should autodetect and reinstall in DMA mode.

That's perhaps the most likely cause of your problem. Good luck.
This solved a similar problem of mine and is probably the most common DVD burner issue I have ever seen. Good luck!

    *sigh*

What you have described - end of the disc crapping out - is the most prevalent symptom of BAD MEDIA.

    Buy some better discs, dude.

I agree with Gurm and Treebeard. Either get better media or if you need to use these "bad" discs up, set DVDShrink to transcode to a smaller MB size. I think the default size is 4464MB You might want to set it to 200 - 300 MB less. You can find this setting, I believe in preferences (not sure 'cause I'm not in front of my home computer.)

  9. I agree, end of disc crapping out is a media issue.
I see this when I use a DVD-RW to test my burns. But when I copy to the DVD-+R, I don't see the issue(good media I guess).

Try what louv68 says and lower your target size. I think 200-300MB is overkill, but it will definatley let you know if thats the problem or not.

    Ditto.

The very first media I used when I first got my burner were the no name, cheapest I could find and they all started messing up towards the end of the movie. Switched to Ritek brand and never had that problem again.

Now, inevitably, someone will come in here and proclaim that Ritek sucks, and that PRINCO are the way to go. *sigh*

  13. Actually, I use PRINCO discs. Are these not good? I have burned over 200 DVD's with these discs and never once had a problem. Could there be any other causes for my problem?

I changed the DMA settings like the first person suggested, but that didn't help.

I think it may be a media problem.

I use Matrix (Taiyo Yuden) and have backed up Along Came Polly hundreds of times. I sell them on the street for $5, with a money-back guarantee, and haven't had a return yet (I'm at the same spot every day).

I don't ever understand these pathetic attempts to cajoul someone into reporting you for 'illegal' activity and then crowing how dumb they are for falling for it.
Not exactly in the spirt of the AUP, is it?

I'm not disagreeing Will. Supreme's sense of humor is dry to say the least. Could be that I also have a dry sense of humor, which is why I found his Latin saying funny.

But, for humor, Baldrick has given us the Off Topic forum. However, it is hard to keep some humor out of the other topics, like when you had your **ahem** "keyboard problem"!

No accident, I'm sure. Etur looks more latin than eurt. Anyway, I don't even read those cute sayings some people put at the bottom of all their posts, let alone translate or decode them.

Because of your authoritative tone, yet absolute failure to know the truth, I am forced to come to the conclusion that you're an idiot. I have personally backed up Along Came Polly with no problems whatsoever, so it's not "the pressing" and not "all copies" are affected. Jeez.
