WASHINGTON, DC -- The American Film Institute (AFI) today announced an "AFI Salute to Jack Valenti" Washington, DC reception to honor the legendary Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) president in the Nation's Capital -- for thirty-eight years his home as Capitol Hill 's motion picture liaison. Mr. Valenti, who plans to retire as MPAA chief at May's end, has also served on AFI's Board of Trustees as a founding member since 1967 and was recently honored by its Board in Los Angeles.

The Washington, DC AFI Salute to Jack Valenti will feature a May 11 reception in his honor at Washington's Willard InterContinental Hotel.

AFI will be joined at the reception by a number of Mr. Valenti's associates and friends, including Hollywood icons Kirk and Ann Douglas; Washington notables George Stevens, Jr. and Chuck Robb; and dozens of Congressional friends, including Louisiana Senator John Breaux and California Senator Dianne Feinstein, all of whom will gather to raise a Washington-style farewell toast to one of the nation's most revered motion picture advocates. The evening's tribute, featuring a number of brief remarks, will be held in the Willard Hotel Ballroom from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

  5. It's good to see my hard work appreciated by my fellow Motion Picture associates. I must say that I believe that I have made the industry better by cracking down on illegal file sharers, downloaders, and even parents who use the "backup copy because of the kids" excuse to cover up their poor and inattentive parenting practices. Like I always said, "If you want a copy, buy another." Men and women of the industry have been reduced to practically living under bridges. I think Patrick Ewing said it best a few years ago when he spoke of NBA players: "Yeah, they make a lot of money. But they spend a lot too." Same holds true for us.
