Hello!
I've made lots of test and I discovered the best way (in my opinion) to make VCD disks with very good quality using AIW 128 (MMC 6.3). After various disappointments, I capture into MPEG2 640x480, CBR 3000 and, after, I convert to VCD standard using TMPEGENC. The result file is amazing, almost so good as VCD samples from this site. I think you should try this method.
Unfortunatelly, I've noticed there are syncronism errors between audio and video. During the file, sometimes it's OK, sometimes audio is advanced in relation to video. Does anybody know why?
I have an Athlon 650, 128 MB RAM, MB Biostar, AIW 128 Pro, W98SE, MMC 6.3.

Can you upgrade to MMC 7.0? you can save yourself a lot of steps - see the link in my sig. Also there are at least 3 or 4 good threads about how best to make VCD compliant MPEG's with the AIW (using both MMC 6.3 and MMC 7.0)

TMPGEnc sometimes does that audio delay thing - again to save myself from typing a lot I'll just tell you that there are a bunch of threads suggesting solutions and alternative methods. IFilmEdit, VCDCutter are two that come to mind.

Thank you, Stinky!
I think I solved the problem, bring down the Motion Estimate gauge to 10. When I was capturing, none frame was dropped, but I notice that the time counter skiped some seconds. I think it's solved, but I'm not sure. I have to capture a video with more than 10 min to be sure.
I've notice that with MMC 7.1 I can't capture MPEG2 640x480 because I lose frames. MMC seems be better in this aspect. Am I wrong?
I've tried to capture directly to VCD in MMC 6.3 and 7.1, but the results were bad, even using that registry patches. When I use MPEG2 640x480 -> VCD through TMPEGENC, the result is very very good. If you can, try this. I think you'll agree.
Is MMC 7.0 good? I've never tried it.
Well, once again, thank you and, please, don't be rigid with my English. I'm from Brazil and my English is weak.

7.1 is better than 7.0. but make sure you install the DVD 4.1 with MMC 7.1, since it's more than just a dvd player, it has updates to the capture algorithms too.
10 seems awfully low for ME. have you thought about just going to MPEG-1 640x480? it's much easier on your processor, and i think TMPG will take MPEG-1 directly as a source, so you can skip the DVD2AVI process. at 640x480 3000kbps the quality should be very good, and with a higher ME, say 40-50, it's definitely possible it could look better than the MPEG-2 at ME 10. -
I have to agree with patrickm here
10 for ME seems to little just to capture to MPEG-2
your better off doing 1 of two things - moving to MPEG-1 and moving up your ME (plus then you can skip the DVD2AVI step) or capturing directly into VirtualDub with a "lossless" codec and then converting that AVI into an SVCD or whatever else you want.
for the best quality source you should go with the VirtualDub capture
for ease of use and MPEG-1 captures stick with MMC
it depends on the desired final result -
This is strange for me.
That ME I said is of the MMC 6.3 (0 - 20). In MMC 7.1 ME is expressed as a percentage (0 - 100%). I've noticed I'm not able to capture to 640x480 with no frames lost. Now, i'm going to install DVD 7.1 to see if it will improove capture.
I don't use DVD2AVI before TMPEGENC. Is there any problem if I open mpeg2 files directly in TMPEGENC?
I'm going to test more, but do you think I would be able to capture to 640 x 480 with no frame lost? I think something is wrong. In fact, when I try capture in 640x480, aproximately 25% of frames are dropped, MPEG1 or MPEG2. My system is weak for this or I'm doing something wrong.
I think directly capture to VCD is bad. I use ME 100% in MMC 7.1 and 18 in MMC 6.3 and the results are files with a lot of blocks.
Thank you, Stinky and Patrickm, for your valious help.

One thing more...
Is there a way to capture AVI through VirtualDub having MMC 7.1 instead of 6.3 installed?
Well, I've tried to capture with VirutalDub having MMC 6.3, but i could only capture in 352x240. Could I do anything to improov it? Which codec is the best for this? MJPEG?
Once more, thanks in advance.
