  1. I'm planning to move one on my machines to linux and being a complete noob with it, I was wondering easy video processing ( capturing, backup, vcr-> dvd, all aspects) is compared to Windows. I don't mind a learning curve and having started in DOS. i'm not afraid of a command line (just out of practise), But I want to kow if it is doable. Thanks Nyah Levi

  2. Linux is a great OS, but I remember it being very hard to set up video4linux (needed for webcams/tv tuner/analog to digital) when I tried a year ago. In then end, I was able run my VCR through my webcam and watch TV on my computer (with help from some friendly linux experts).

I am not sure how different it is to do this today, but if you can use linux, its a more powerful system than windows. There are many websites where you can get started (I dont know if it still exists in its same form, but http://www.linuxnewbie.org was helpful years ago).

I use ffmpeg to capture to avi/vcd/svcd/raw format.
I use Avidemux to convert & edit the video clip to the required format vcd svcd or DVD.
If burning a vcd or svcd I use k3b to burn.
If burning a DVD I use qdvdauthror.

So yes it is possable to do all in Linux.

P.S. I use Mandrake. It setup my tv capture card without any hassles. I found it easier to setup with less problems than WinXP which didn't reconize my tv card and has crashed on me during a video capture.
