  1. That's a pest about the Intel overclocking, but I'm an AMD man so the same won't happen to nVidia chipsets...

If my RAM is really holding me back I'll need to look for a DDR466 512MB module. I already have 2 x 256MB Kingston HyperX DDR466 modules running dual-channel, so it has to be a single module.

Good advice about slackening the timings. I'll do it.

CPU should arrive tomorrow or Wednesday.

Don't count on AMD not following Intel's lead on the overclock-block. Neither wanted to do it first for fear the other wouldn't follow but I think since Intel took the first step that AMD will follow suit in the near future. I'm not an opponent of either manufacturer as I have both. I'd give AMD the edge on single processors with their FX-series CPUs, but with the release of the Nocona Xeons today Intel still has the lead in the SMP world. The Opterons are not an all-encompassing solution just yet. In a month the new Xeons and chipsets will take on the Opteron-dominated server world. I haven't heard if AMD is developing a workstation platform for the Opteron's yet.

  5. My new CPU is running FSB204, Multi 11.5 @ vCore 1.825 = 2346MHz. I can get it at 200 x 12 for 2400MHz but it craps out on a Prime95 torture test. It seems stable as it is though, but it's yet to be tested with a huge long loop on RealStorm.

Still, that's a 513MHz overclock and a 278MHz improvement on my last CPU. Plus, I've got an extra 16MHz on the FSB which should help things.

In all, it's a little disappointing - I was aiming for 2.4GHz stable but I'm pretty close so I'm not worried. Hopefully it'll be stable now!

EDIT - The maximum temperature I recorded was 66 deg C. That's a bit high but it's stable so I suppose...

haha, i can just imagine a 66C chip in a laptop, as it slowly melts through the plastic case and drops onto your legs!

  7. I overclock until I get the fsb as high as it will go with stability.Always overclock my video cards as well, but not to the extreme that some people do...vid cards are too expensive to get all crazy with.

  8. I took the FSB up as high as possible, but I was going to gain more by backing the FSB off and increasing the multiplier than driving FSB alone. I did take into account the extra bandwidth a higher FSB gives, so it's a question of trade-offs.

As for video cards, I have tried overclocking mine but I don't get more than 2% on either core or memory so it's not worth it. A more powerful CPU is of more value to me anyway.

Flan, this CPU levelled off at 43 deg C at standard (133Mhz x 11) - 1463Mhz. That's still hot for an XP-M. I think I've been unlucky and got two hot CPUs in a row! Never mind - it's ripping through a DivX encode just now and it's running 150MHz quicker than an XP3200 so I really can't complain. Luck of the draw, I suppose.

If the 1900 MPs that were in my Tyan when it fried got toasted then I'm getting XP-Ms for that board when it comes back from RMA. Lots of people are getting really good results from those on MP boards. Apparently they use the same pins and are recognized as MPs on boot. However it also depends on the board I get back from RMA. There are some 2460 owners getting 2466s back since the 2460 is no longer made. If that's the case and the 1900s are dead I'm just going to get a pair of 2800 MPs for that board and let it rest. No need to overclock my server box.
