  1. Thanks for helping a newbie

I just got a Pioneer DVD 107 (OEM)
It came with nothing but an installation sheet.
I've never seen an OEM product without at least a floppy with drivers or a manual.

How do I burn a DVD. Do I just need software like nero to get the drive to burn DVD-R+R-RW+RW

    need guidance

Yes. you also need to plug in the drive (obviously).
DVDdecrypter has it's own burning engine, and DVDshrink can use nero's.

  3. Plug it in, windows will install it.

Dvd decrypter is a good recommendation. Look in the tools here for other freeware burning tools.

Might be worth buying a copy of nero.

Where did you buy it from? Some stores sell the OEM version of Nero quite cheaply. It's a really good all-rounder of a program, but there are some good freeware or trial programs around.

  7. PC Village in Toronto, Canada.

Their really cheap, but very no frills when you buy oem.
    pioneer DVD 107 - $ 127 Canadian ($94 US)

OEM software - Thats a joke right. Why would they sell their software for 5 bucks?

It's no joke and IT'S LEGAL. We can buy Nero for £5 here:

It's just the CD and nothing else - no manual, no box etc.

For years as far as I can remember. We've all been made paranoid by the extortionate costs of Microsoft Windows and Office, OEM and retail!

You said you bought an OEM drive, so surely you've already seen the savings over getting the retail version!

  11. Yes but there's been exceptions.

I was bummed out when my Radeon AIW didn't have MGI Videowave software with it. I went out and bought the software anyway. It was dumb.

My Audigy2 card was a good deal, Its a sound card, I just needed the drivers.

Well see, I still want MyDVD and Nero for the burner.

  12. Sometimes OEM might com with an OEM software package but most the time it's just the hardware and no software.
Also you might see 2 OEM packages at different prices, one is hardware only and the other costs $5-$10 more and has the OEM software package.

When I buy for myself, I just get Hardware only OEM, but if I am building a system for sale to someone else I might buy a OEM with software package so I can install the software for them and pass on the disks to them too.

I think CD burners were a good example from newegg of this. I think it was Lite-on Burners I was buying that came in 3 choices alot. OEM, OEM with software, Retail.

Most the time OEM with burner is crapola anyway, like Nero, it only works with the burner it came with. So what do you do if you buy a second burner, install nero a second time?

Lots of free burner programs around, most I think are better than nero anyway.

Can't say how the new version is since I have not upgraded to it yet, but Tmpgenc DVD Author is a great little authoring program and also has a built in burner. When Nero was turning out IFFEY DVDs that sometimes would not play in certain players and sometimes would, Tmpgenc DVD Author never failed even once to play in all DVD players I tried the disks in.
Of course it only burns movie DVDs, but I would geuss about 90% of people don't know there is any aother type anyway.
