When I have a blank DVD-R disc inside the Pioneer DVR-107, I can't go to a URL with Internet Explorer, nor can I use any app by going File -> Open to browse the directories. It's just frozen at that point. As soon as I pop out the blank media, all is back to normal...Internet Explorer goes to the URL's just fine and the app can browse the directories. I changed to different discs and the same problems occured. The blank media is Ritek G04. There is no other CD drive or DVD drive. This is the only one. Can someone please advise? Thanks in advance

have you flashed a different firmware to the drive? do you have auto run enabled for blank media?

Remember that Explorer and Internet Explorer are essentially the same program - just set up differently at their startup. It may be that IE is scanning your drives/partitions when it starts. This isn't something I've heard of before, though I couldn't say why it would need to. Try disabling AutoRun and see if it still happens.

As for File->Open dialogues, does the same happen with File->Save? Usually if I have a CD or DVD in a drive, the drives/partitions above it will appear but there will be a slight delay while the disc is read and it will appear to hang before it shows as normal - even though I have all the automatic stuff turned off.

yeah i had a computer which used to hang for ~30 seconds on file dialog boxes while it tried to work out where the floppy drive had gone.

another thing to look out for is packet writing software - that stuff seems to really **** up some systems.

  5. I had a similar problem with a system running Win2k having a DVD Rom. If a DVD (Commercial type, nor -/+R) was left in the DVD ROM it would not reboot or start. During start-up, when the OS was checking drives, it would hang when the DVD Rom was checked the light would stay on and would not continue to boot. Once I left, and when I came back 2 hrs. later it still hadn't booted. I never found a solution, other than ejecting the DVD.
If it works, don't fix it.
