Hmm.. according the Yamada forums the 6xxx line isn't perfect as well. I mean, no matter what excellent player you choose you'll always find something it isn't good at. Nothing can be perfect at everything especially since the technology is in such flux. Divx is normally a more stable codec but when people start encoding their movies with bizarre xvid standards then yer likely to run into problems. Nature of the beast until something stabilizes.

Where in Canada other than mail-order can you find the RJ-Tech unit and who actually makes it? It looks like many another Chinese made deck. And KARAOKE...who actually uses that? I have a whole buncha players (7 at last count) and the latest ones I've made sure do NOT have that "feature," since it will never be used. It may be the "in" thing in Asia or Japan (or it was at one time) but in North America or Europe?? I can't see it...

heheh.. I well never EVER use the KARAOKE feature (personally, I think its the most "gayess" thing invented but if thats yer thing then go knock your socks off impersonating Mr. Singer Formage! hehe).

Anyway.. I picked up my Mark2 player north of Toronto. Look a few posts back as I mentioned the link where I found this player. Its quite the player and hell.. better than waiting 3 weeks for something that looks and plays just as good.

Yep.. however.. the reason I went with the RJ Tech RJ-1500DVX-II was due to this:

    Philips 642 - $100CAD - YES

    RJTech 1500 - $180CAD - NO (or Maybe)

Their price point is too high. The features that they seem to point to may be misleading in that comparison: HDCD playback on the RJ but not on the 642 but the 642 also has HDCD outputs so it should also play HDCD; Mpeg1 playback on the RJ but only VCD (also Mpeg-1) on the 642; etc. Also, I notice at least a few posts saying that the RJ has problems with some XviD files. That sucks for me since many of the Usenet groups I'm on use either DivX or Xvid and that would be a plus for me if I could play both with no problems.

On another note, can you tell me who makes the RJ? Look on the back of the unit and let me know what it says on it's manufacturer plate.

    TIA

The RJ is more than the 642.. granted. Both players (like most in the industry) DO NOT RELIABLY PLAY many incarnations of Xvid. As mentioned a few messages up I stated the kind of Xvid movie I was having some issues with: it plays the movie but there are noticeable "ghost pixels" here and there. Strange but not surprised as no current player is Xvid-certified. Many are Divx-certified but since everyone is encoding in both Divx & Xvid one can expect that standards will go out the window until the manufactures catch up. Its just the way it is.

As for the manufacturer of the RJ 1500-2 player.. I think its RJ Technology but let me look at the back to confirm.

Good sites to check it out are :

This is funny...these sites list the RJTech decks at less than the Philips...a situation that is reversed here in Canada...

  12. i bought the philips dvp642 from a radio shack (can you believe it.. i bought something from radio shack.. i felt dirty.. but the price wasn't too bad and it did everything i wanted.. it even crops PAL properly). I paid 99 bux. I used the radio shack website to track down which store in my area had it.

i should also mention that comparison list isn't entirely accurate. I can play raw mpegs without them being converted to vcd or svcd.. which is kinda cool cause then i can burn a bunch of mpegs onto a dvd without having to reencode with 48000 sound.

i'm liking the dvp642.. it'll do until standalone dvdrecorders get cheaper. And i really like that it does dvd+rw. My last player was a daewoo 5800 which did alot with the hacked firmware i ran on it. But I really wanted pal to be cropped properly (anamorphic pal) and the divx thing was a total bonus.

Cool.. I just need one of my colleagues to go and buy the 642 then we can actually have a play-off to see what does what better.. Both players seem good and thats what counts.
