  1. I took a two hour show in VirtualDub and erased out all the commercials. At which point I realized it's now 90 minutes, too big for an 80 minute CD. I want to Frameserve this to TMPGEnc, but need it to be in two halves. I don't want to convert it to MPG and split it in half... and I don't want to save the file I've edited as a new AVI file. Is there a way I can split this edited file into two different things I can frameserve to seperate MPG files?

I'm afraid this doesn't make sense, so let me sum it up:
    * SHOW.avi is 2 hours, then edited down to 90 minutes
    * Want to frameserve SHOW.avi to SHOW.mpg through TMPGEnc
    * Need the 90 minute VDub file to be split in two
    * Don't want to save changes as a new AVI
    * Don't want to frameserve to MPG and then split

Is there a way I can frameserve to two seperate files without frameserving half and having to reopen the original file in VDub and do all the changes over again?

You can use the source range option in the advanced tab in TMPGenc to tell it to encode the whole frameserved file, yet split it wherever you want.

Why don't you want to split the mpg after encoding? This would definitely be the best way since you cut it by how much space it takes up on the cdr. This way you can ensure that you completely fill both cdrs. Of course you would need to use bbmpeg to do this.

  3. I've always been told to never split an MPG if you have the AVI available to you... so I've gotten into the habit of never cutting an MPG or doing anything to it, doing all my editing to the AVI and then frameserving.

  4. You could also lower the bitrate to get all 90min to fit on 1CDR (just another option not necessarily the best).

  5. This wouldn't work, as I need a VCD. Thanks though.

Well it is best to do all your editing in avi format but when it comes to splitting a file so that it can be spanned across multiple cdrs then you definitely want to do that after encoding to mpg. Unless your encoding in cbr then the exact center of your avi file will not be the exact center in size of your mpg. If your conservative with your bitrate than you will have left over space on your cdr that could have been used, and if your not conservative you run the risk of having one half of your movie too big to fit on your cdr and one half too small.

In this situation you should definitely cut your mpg after encoding but you must use bbmpeg so that you can cut by MB, to completely fill each disk. Trust me, bbmpeg cuts mpgs well, unlike all other mpeg editors. Your file will be compliant and will be the exact size you specify, which is ideal for spanning mpgs across multiple cdrs.
