Where to get MPEG1 & 2 Export Codecs for Quicktime ?

Hi,

I just don't get it. Do I have to buy those codecs (mpeg 1 and 2) or do I have to buy some programs that I can use those export functions via Quicktime Pro ??

Which Programs do I have to buy then ??

To work with MPEG2 Media in Quicktime Pro you have to buy the MPEG2 Compoment (available in the Apple Store).

To work with MPEG1 you don't have to buy anything. QT plays MPEG1, but it can't export a movie to MPEG1. Use ffmpegX (or any other Movie->MPEG1 / Movie->VCD Converter) for that.

Playback-component for MPEG1 is included and it can be downloaded for old systems (8.x). It's free.

For MPEG2, playback component has to be bought, since MPEG2 is under certain patents.

Apple's MPEG2-encoder is included with DVD Studio Pro and there are few other (commercial) encoders like Bitvice.

As Miksu said QT can already play mpeg1 files. If you're running an extremely old version of the MacOS you can download an mpeg1 playback component for free. If you're running OS X then mpeg1 playbacksupport is already installed with quicktime.

As far as I recall Quicktime pro cannot export mpeg1. Also despite the fact the mpeg2 component is called a decoder you can still export mpeg2 from QT Pro if you have the component installed.

Actually my friend, you need to go on a journey to
find a copy of Toast Titanium 5x.
This particular version of Toast ( known here on
the board as Toast Legacy) came with a MPEG-1
codec for Quicktime that still cannot be beat by
Compressor ( Compressor 1.2, as documneted
just about EVERYWHERE, sucks for MPEG-1 export).

This codec, called the Quicktime Video CD Plugin,
is the holiest of holies for those who do VCD/SVCD
builds.


Last I saw,
you could still buy it from Amazon.com,
Roxio Direct, and third party vendors
like Shreve Systems, MacResQ,
and MacofAllTrades.

Otherwise, if you want to skip the whole Quicktime angle,
You could just buy the newest version, Toast 6.05, and
do your builds in VCD/SVCD with it, as Toast 6's export /build
capabilities are VERY good ( but not as sophisticated as DVDSP3).

Buy Roxio Toast and you can export from QT to MPEG-1

Or use one of the numerous other programs to convert video to MPEG-1 and pay $0

I have the Quicktime MPEG-2 component and I can playback MPEG-2, but there's no export option anywhere. Have I been missing something?

The MPEG-2 playback component ($19.99 from Apple) will NOT encode MPEG-2. YOu must have the mpeg-2 encode component, only available bundled with DVD Studio Pro, and possible with FCP.

Even though it doesn't include the QT export option like Toast 5, Toast 6 Titanium can also be used for encoding to MPEG-1 or 2. Just adjust the Preferences so the transcoded audio & video files in your ~/Documents/Roxio Converted Items/ folder aren't auto-deleted.

Another option for MPEG-2 is iDVD, which is cheap if not free. Uncheck the "Delete rendered files after closing a project" preference, and converted audio & video are stored inside the project package. When encoding is finished, right- or control-click the project file and choose "Show Package Contents." The video file should be the only one in the Resources/MPEG folder. Rename it and give it a .m2v extension. Of the two files in the Resources/Audio folder, the audio file is the larger one that doesn't end in "Info." Rename it and give it a .aiff extension. Convert to MP2 and mux.

It's worth noting that whether you use Toast 5 or 6, the only MPEG-1 option is VCD compliant 1150kbps video, 224kbps audio at 44.1kHz.

I've heard reposrts on the Apple board that Squeeze is good for MPEG-1.

Compressor 1.2, which I have and have tested, sucks for MPEG-1.


ffmpegx is good, but the Toast 5 component is the most
QT Compliant plugin. Think of it as the ron pompeil of
Video CD export encoders, you can set it, forget it, and it makes QT compatible VCD everytime.

Why do you need QT compatible
VCDs/SVCDS you ask?

Because if you are going to burn onto
media using TOAST 5 or 6, it must be QT compliant, as TOAST will not accept anything that isn't. ( especially 5, version 6 will try to re-encode it into the proper spec.)

The only thing that I need to do is export mpg1 movies for viewing on the web, but lots and lots of them.

I have the Toast 5 plug-ins already, never upgraded to Toast 6. There doesn't seem to be a lot of options using it so I was looking for something with more options like different aspect ratios.

Actually a few days has gone by since I first found this board and am able to post on it so I have been doing lots of reading and even played around with ffmpegx a bit. ffmpegx seems a bit confusing but maybe if I used it a bit more it wouldn't seem so bad.

Right now I'm leaning towards Squeeze, but wanted to get some opinions before I spend money.
