  1. Hello,

I've loaded my E.T. Extra Terrestrial Limited Collector's Edition DVD into DVD Shrink and noticed something odd. Under the main movie, it lists four Audio outputs: AC3 5.1 English, DTS 5.1 English, AC3 5.1 French and AC3 English - Director's Comment.

The thing that gets me is, I cannot find link via the menus to a director's commentary. Is there some way I can find out what this audio track is?

The language menu only lists three audio tracks (dolby, dts and french). It's just as big as the other AC3 tracks (MBs), and I've checked the internet for "Easter Eggs" and such as well as manually checked the menus for hidden hit points.

What is this track, and how can I find out what's in it?

    Thanks.

Play back the ripped DVD files using WinDVD or PowerDVD and after you start the movie it should let you change the audio track to the one you can't find on the menu using the menu of the software DVD player.

If that doesn't work then run the VOB's through DVD2AVI and demux the audio then load the AC-3 into your software DVD player and there you go.

  3. Welcome to the forums, SecretAgentRege.

More often than not, commentaries are selectable from the "Extra Features" menu.
    Have you checked it?

To preview audio stream in DVD Shrink, right-click in the preview window while the title is playing (or when it has been selected).
This will give you access to an "Audio" sub-menu from which you can select the track you want to hear.

It's certainly not the directors commentary as Spielberg doesn't do them, it's probably the music only track.

Thanks, I had no idea you could do this. At first, I couldn't tell any difference between the normal and the stream labeled director's comments, except that the latter had less bass during playback.

Then, a little further in, I heard applause. It appears the director's comments stream is audio from a theatrical preview of sorts, in which you can hear the audience's applause, and perhaps gasps and such throughout the movie.

A rather interesting stream, and I wonder how to access it through the menus on the actual DVD (since no options could be found, linked or hidden), but for now, I shall only keep the DTS stream anyway.

    Thanks for the help.

That's exactly why I was so interested to see what it was...

That's interesting SecretAgentRege. I have this DVD and if there is any way to activate this audio stream via the menu's its definitely an easter egg cause I certainly don't see it.

I think this stream is the audio from the premiere of the theatrical re-release. They assembled John Williams and an entire orchestra in the theatre to play the score live along side the movie. There is a feature on one of the disks showing the event. Pretty cool, I wonder why they didn't make this feature more obvious.

Yeah, I checked there and other Easter Egg sites earlier (I put that in my first post).

Yup, you're right. You can access the stream by going to the "John Williams Live at.." option under bonus materials. I figured that was merely a featurette, not a seperate stream along with the movie. My bad.
