Is your video in .mpeg or .avi format? and what do you want your output file ot be. if you want an mpeg you can just run it through TMPGEnc.

Gold Wave can convert your mp3 file to wave, which you use to make a DVD. It also has filters to clean up your sound if you need to.

The video is in avi format, dont really care what the output file is i can always convert it later.
Im fine with converting both separately
All i need to know is how to add the sound to the videoif i put both streams in tmpeg its gonna be very badly out of sync.
how can i change it to make the audio in sync
    cheers

First, find out how much out of synch the audio is. Load it into Gold Wave, add the silence or delete the extra audio. Save as a wave file. Load the original video into Virtual Dub, select Audio=>Wave=your new audio file. Save under a new file name, which, of course, contains the new in-synch audio and video.

Load the avi into virtualdub and then load the wav you just converted into audio/wave audio and choose interleaving in the audio menu and input the amount of +/- delay into audio skew correction, then play the avi with virtualdub and see if the audio matches the video,if not go back to interleaving and keep adjusting till you get the results you want and then save avi as,make sure video is set to direct stream.Doing it this way you dont have to keep opening and saving in virtualdub.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.
