  1. I have Ulead VideoStudio 7
I can capture as a avi file.
I see an option for MPEG-1

I am trying to use DVauthor or TMPEGenc
    Both want the MPEG-2 format.

Do I have to capture as MPEG-2 or do I convert the AVI files?

VideoStudio 7 works with the AVI files, but will not add chapters, that is why I need different author software.

The best results will be to capture to AVI, edit the AVI, then output the edited video to Mpeg-2.

An mpeg encoder like TMPGEnc (the encoder and not TDA).

  5. TMPEGenc does MPEG-1

The trial version is over for MPEG-2

    Is MPEG-1 good enough?

My Ulead videoStudio can do that....

352x240 NTSC (288 for PAL) is the only valid DVD resolution for mpeg1. If you want to use anything higher then you need to go with mpeg2.
