  1. i bought an s-video cable today with the aim of connecting my VCR to my canopus advc-100, and achieving better quality than the composite video connection.

my VCR has a scart socket, so i bought one of those adapters to connect the s-video cable to the scart.

when i plugged it in, though, the picture only appeared in black and white.

is it actually possible to get a colour s-video signal from a normal VCR, or will i need an s-vhs VCR?

    thanks.

NO, a normal VHS recorder will not have a S-VIDEO out signal.

It's really not worth to buy a new SVHS recorder only to be able to use a SVHS connection. Specially if you use only normal VHS tapes with it. Using a SVHS recorder for playing back normal VHS does not necessarily give a better picture!. I have both kinds of VCR's here which i use with my D8-DV camcorder to digitize my VHS tapes. My normal Panasonic VCR gives me better results compared with a SVHS JVC i have here.

  4. I have used one of these and you have to have both s video and rca composite leads connected to get colour-dunno why.

I am lucky, I have a sony vcr, dual desk hi-8 and vhs, suppose thats why its has a s-video out, I am getting great quality with it and canopus advc300.

Just getting to end of learning curve, tmpgenc express gives great picture conversion from vhs to vai, but am fighting with the sound at the moment.

  6. Have you successfully obtained a colour picture using your canopus 100?

I asked, as,idiot I am, found that I had the wrong dip switch setting on my 300 which produced b&w images on the computer.

I do not know if dip switches on 100 are same, but in switch settings 1 bank, sw 6 has to be on and rest off, I think I had ntsc setup level sw 5, set to on, didn;t think it mattered if I had switch 6 set to PAl, but evidently this mistaken setting(s) prodcues a secam image, b&w in Pal.

  8. does the 100 have a setting where you tell it which input yo use?

If not suspect your vcr will not play witht eh scart to rac converter.
