  1. What is the best software to use to convert downloaded mpeg4 (mp4) to avi or dv so I can edit it? I use Edit Studio 4.

  2. I don't know if its the best way but....

You could install 3ivX trial and use Graphedit to decode to uncompressed AVI.

I've tried to remux to Matroska (MKV) but i occasionally have trouble with the mp4v FourCC code. Changing it to XviD doesn't seem to work, but changing to DivX makes the video stream viewable in VirtualDubMod.

The audio stream i've never had much luck decoding with anything other than the 3ivX decoder.

If you have QuickTime Pro, then you can export MP4 directly to AVI, or DV-AVI.

If your willing to try the TMPGEnc trial, then with 3ivX installed, you can open the MP4 by choosing "All Files" and then export the AVI through "File / Output to file / AVI file".
