after reinstalling XP - PC won't play DVDs anymore ???

i have a strange problem : i reinstalled winXP (after formatting) on a friends PC (P4 2G) and now after everything else works just fine it won't play DVDs anymore ? before everything worked perfect ! it plays DIVX (haven't tried MPG1/2 - the only software he has is WINDVD which worked perfekt before reinstalling XP)
when i try to load a DVD WINDVD closes directly after 2-3 sec (mediaplayer does the same thing) - also with ISO-files using nero image drive (so it's no DVD-drive problem)
...i already uninstalled and reinstalled WINDVD (will try other software these days)
what went wrong ??? any ideas out there

I had a similar problem (Windows 2000 though) after a reinstall and fixed it (not exactly sure why) by installing forceASPI which you can get here:

Same symptoms desn't mean the same problems but maybe worth a try?
