hi all, i got my new sony dru-700a DL writer yesterday, , which btw hasnt given me any problems as yet, although i havent got any media to try writing any dl discs. seeing as ive got a seperate dvd rom drive as well as my new dvd writer drive now, whether using dvd shrink to directly backup a movie to a dvd5 is reccomended? i mean rather than saving the contents to the hard drive to remove the copy protection and just go straight ahead with the burn. i read somewhere that copying a disc directly isnt reccomended because the laser can move off course and wreck the disc. has anyone tried this? is it reccomended?

  2. DVDSHrink will copy files to the hard drive whether you have 2 DVD drives or not.

I know, Instant Copy will do a Disc to Disc copy but it cant be copy protected (CSS Encrypted). I will warn you though, it is still a very lenghty process. Its almost just as fast to copy to your Hard Drive then convert and burn. I did a Disc to Disc backup before with IC and it took about 45min. on a 4x Pioneer burner and a 16x DVD-ROM, where as if I ripped then burned it would only take about 7min to rip using the 16x DVD-ROM and then another 15min to burn. You may be able to do the AnyDVD unlock the CSS and then try. Im not promising anything, but good luck.

Shrink creates a temp video folder with all the shrunk files and then burns to the disk, so I suspect that you can have the original in your rom drive and the blank in the burner. This would only be faster if your rom is a faster reader than your burner. Shrink will remove any copy protection.

I'm a little lost by exactly what it is you think you can do and what you want to do.

You can't put a commercial DVD in your ROM and a blank in your burner and hit copy and do it without any HD interaction because of CSS, although AnyDVD is rumoured to be good.

As mentioned, even DVDShrink stores the files on your HD regardless of if you have 1 drive or two and even if you have the "Burn with Nero" or "Burn with DVDDecrypter" options selected.
    If in doubt, Google it.

weird, ive just tried 1 of the 4 dvds ive backed up using dvd shrink and i get a "bad disc" error in my cyberhome stand alone dvd player! ive never actually backed up a retail dvd before, i always used to use dvdxcopy. the dvds ive backed up using dvd shrink work fine on my dad's alba dvd player and all the computers in my house, yet not my cyberhome ad-l528. ive shrunk dvds ive created using videos i downloaded before to fit onto a dvd-5, which all work fine on my dvd player. does ne1 have any idea why my dvd backups may be giving me this error?

    Try to get better media.

There are many many many post's on "Bad Discs" or Disc Doesnt Play" etc. Search the forum on it and find decent media.

  8. I use dvd shrink. If the quick analysis when I open the disc comes up 100% I burn directly from the ROM drive to the burner drive. Cuts time about in half not having to copy to hard drive and then recopy to burner drive. Shrink must disable the copyprotection when you open the disc or during analysis. If less than 100% or I have to alter the disc in any way, I copy to hard drive first. Don't think it would work otherwise.
