  1. I burn onto 80 minute discs... in addition to the clip, I'll have a 5 second intro clip and a set of chapters throughout the clip.

I know the VCD files and the chapter's information all take up some space on the disc... so how much time does that leave for me to put the video clip on there? If I have an 80 minute clip... how much of that clip will I have to erase to make it fit on the 80 minute disc?

  2. Most 80min discs in reality hold a few seconds less than 80min. For this example, let us say that the CD holds 79:57.

Now, your intro clip is 5 seconds long, and if it is in its own track, there'll be a 2 second pre gap as well. (7 seconds total).

The minimum size of the first logical track (where stuff like menus are placed) is 6 seconds. For each additional menu screen, they take up 2 seconds of space. If we include the CD-i application as well, that takes up ~10 s. So, let's be conservative and say that the first logical track takes up 20s (CD-i app + several menu screens).

Finally, on the track of your main movie clip, there will be a 2 second pregap as well.

    Thus:

    79:57 - 00:07 - 00:20 - 00:02
    = 79:28

However, if your CD burner is capable of overburning, you can usually overburn safely by up to a minute on most media...

  3. I have it on good authority that you can overburn to 83min 59sec on a 80 min CD !

  4. No.

The degree to which you can overburn depends both on the batch and brand of the media, and on your burner.

It is actually very unlikely that you can overburn to 83:59 safely on standard 80min media most of the time.

Usually, you can get about 2 minutes worth. 1 minute is almost assured which was why I quoted it before.
