  1. I've always used instantcopy when back-up my dvd's, until my friend introduced me to CCE. He says this is the best back-up program ever.
He says that he can take a 9gig dvd, and back it up onto a single dvd without touching the original film, but downsamples the extras.

He kept mentioning something about CCE and the number of passes. Default is 1? but he uses 6 for best quality he says. He says 4 passes is not enough, but 6 is great. What the hell do these 'passes' mean?

Is there a 'dummy' website to explain all this? I'd like to understand why this method is the best?

    Thanks

  3. 4 passes? This might make a difference if you're cramming a 120 min movie onto 2 CDRs, but for DVD encoding you shouldn't need more than 2 passes (.VAF creation and main encode).

Basically, 2 Passes would mean that CCE would first scan the movie and create a .VAF file to tell it where all the "busy" parts are, so when it comes to encoding, it can allocate more bitrate to those areas where there are more action scenes, this avoids "blockiness" that can appear during action scenes.

  7. I would just like to know what the whole purpose of this 'passing' stuff means?

  8. More and more fine tuning in bitrate distribution.
