I am using a firewire connection to a sony hc-85 camcorder. (see my system specs above).
I have tried WinDV, Adobe Premiere, Pinnacle 9.......all of these programs freeze my whole computer.
So I am thinking it is somethig else....but what...
I have updated all the drivers I can think of...
Is there a problem with having a RAID system...and having the OS on the same drive....
HELP!

RAID, OS, not likely the problem. Have you checked your 'Device Manager' to see a 'IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers'? Also when the DV device is plugged in, you should see a 'AVC compliant DV Tape recorder/player' in 'My Computer'. Only other things that come to mind are a bad Firewire cable, camera problem or Firewire card problem. If the Firewire is on the PCI bus, turn off the computer and remove it, power on and off, then replace it. (In a different PCI socket if possible.) If all this fails, try the camera and cable on a different computer or see if you can try the combo in a camera/computer store with their equipment.

The device manager shows ohci compliant IEEE 1394 host controller.
My Computer is showing the Sony camcorder.
I can try another PCI slot....i guess it could be bad>??....(the slot).
Any other ideas? -
Yes, try another PCI slot. There are still some PCI cards that can't properly share IRQs with other devices. Some PCI slots share IRQs with the USB controllers etc.

If you have an AGP slot and are using the first PCI slot (the one next to it) you could get these symptoms. On some systems these two slots share the same system interrupt and can end up fighting each other. Especially with something as intensive as DV transfers. If you are using this slot, shifting to another slot will probably fix the problem.
