I have encoded many times with TMPGEnc and have been successful but I just tried to encode an avi and the sound wouldn't work. There is sound on the file but I can't get the sound to work as an mpg file even if I encode it separately. Does anyone know if this would be a problem with the encoder or the file?

Decompress the audio first. Save as .wav load the avi as video source and the wav as audio source.

Do you mean save the audio as a .wav in TMPGEnc and then encode it with the video - because I tried that and it doesn't work. There is no sound. The sound format is MPEG Layer-3 so if I get the latest version of the encoder will it work? Or do I need a codec for it?

Of course you need a MPEG-1 Layer-3 ("MP3") codec to decompress a .mp3 file. Visit Digital-Digest.com if you need to download one.
You can use TMPG (file> output to file> wav file) as well as VirtualDub (file> save wav) to decompress it.

For some reason, TMPGEnc wouldn't recognise the audio but I tried it in VirtualDub and one of the versions of it outputted the sound. So thanks very much for your help
