  1. I used to a have a VISA Card Smart Card reader on this machine. I removed it and all apps.

Now installing a AMEX Smart Card Reader (gemplus.com).

But.. install fails as service cannot start. reason service cannot start is due to "dependent items" not loading that is associated with service. These should not be there. (Install at office shows no dependencies)

Anyone know how I can hack registry, or someplace else, to remove these service item dependencies?

  2. to get in to the registry

click start - run - type "regedit"

Then do a search (F3 I think) and erase all the keys associated with the Visa software.

Back it up 1st though, just in case you delete the wrong thing :P

  3. Thanks,

Went into registry and did multiple searches for all items associated with service and those two rogue dependencies... no luck

  4. well that means that its named something else. other than compaq and sc1104 or whatever it is. You could try start run - msconfig - services tab, then uncheck "smart card and help". Then reboot see if you still have the dependencies, then try to install the new ones.

  5. Thanks... .will gave that a shot...

Wierd how you cannot remove (uninstall) dependent 'items' associated with a service.... or remove a service (as you do a hardware device) and have it reload / reinstall itself on reboot. Or maybe you can but I'm not sure how....

generally, you stop and start services and not remove them. However, You can remove/modify services via the registry.

I'm on win2K, but I suspect that it will be in the same place on XP

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\

    SCardDrv
    SCardSrv

    Hope that helps some

    Edit

    I searched google for your subject line and the first hit was this;

This will allow you to disable a service or uninstall it from your system without effecting another service that depends on it. Here's how you do it

    1. After you have set your services the way you want them and you have disabled/uninstalled something that another services depends on, run "regedit"

    2. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\find the service that will not function, do to another service being disabled/uninstall (found in ControlSet001\Services, ControlSet002\Services, and CurrentControlSet\Services)

    3. Once you have found the service right-click on the string value, "DependOnService,"and modify

    4. You should now see a list of services that it is dependent on. Simply delete the service that you have disabled/uninstalled

    5. Restart your computer and your ready to go Disclaimer REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOU REGISTRY FIRST I'm not totaly sure if this will have any negative effects on your system.

I used this method after uninstalling "Netbios over Tcpip" from my system completely, so that my Dhcp service would function and I have had NO negative effects on my system.

    Edit 2

At least under win2K, you have to use regedt32 not regedit.
with regedit, you just see binary. With regedt32 it uses the multi string editor and is in text list
