I find some of the avi files that I have tend to be dicolored green or pixel checkered. is there a program that can help to fix this? any help that can be provided would be appreciated!

In general the way they came is the way they are. The best bet is to get a good source. some filters in virtualdub can fix a few things, but not by much.
