  1. I want the best media that's able to play movies on my xbox and standalone dvd players and also be able to back my data files. I'm new to this but I've done some reading and I'm under the impression that dvd-r and dvd+r are pretty equal. I'm just being sure. My plan is to buy one kind all the time or in bulk. I've read that dvd media is unpredictable.

DVD-R media in my experience is much more compatible. XBOX is an issue unto itself since it may be picky with recordable media in general.

You can also get higher quality and reliability DVD-Rs if you are willing to pay while super high quality DVD+Rs are hard to come by. Price can be an issue depending on where you shop. DVD+Rs are sometimes cheaper in brick mortar stores but DVD-Rs are usually cheaper in bulk on online stores.

My vote is for DVD-R but that is just because I love these endless format wars.

You will find some people like one format better then the other's. I stick to +R, because all of my home equipment uses it, StandAlone's and PS2, I do have a little stack of -R's, havnt found a reason to use them yet. What you have to do is find out what is BEST for YOU, start out buying small packs, and when you find out, then buy in large bulk.

Everyone is diffrent, depending on burner, software and media.

Get a sample pack from one of the online stores and see what works best for you. Some standalone players will only play - or + so you have to test them or look in the section on the left to see which they will play. Not used any + media myself as my standalone only takes -r disks and the ps2 is quite happy to play -r as well.

Unless you are going to burn a lot of disks quickly i would hold back from buying 100's of disks as the price is still falling and there are still cases where bad batches do appear. Stick to around 50 disks at a time till you are happy with what you are getting is working for you.

The best DVD media is Maxell DVD-R discs and Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs. I don't trust anything DVD+R ... yuck!

You can buy 10-packs of Maxell 4x DVD-R discs at Walmart for something like $16.84 (per 10-pack).

That's about as cheap as you can get them in a retail store.

Taiyo Yuden is pretty cheap on-line through RIMA.COM but to get a good price you need to buy either 50 or 100 at a time.

If a DVD device has trouble playing back a Maxell DVD-R or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R then that DVD device is a POS because those are the two highest grade blank DVD-R discs out there today in the marketplace!

  7. I just bought a 10-pack of 4x maxell 4.7gb dvd+r for $16.84. They suck. Well they're not for me I should say. They didn't play on my xbox and that's my goal. So I'm just gonna use these to back up some files on my PC. Did I just get a bad batch or should I never buy maxell's again? Or should I get some maxell dvd-r next time? Thnax

  8. If you have Samsung drive in your Xbox you need to burn DVD+Rs with DVD-ROM book type and they will work perfect. Of course your DVD writer needs to support bitsetting though.

Have a question for anyone who has the X-box! Is the X-box like the PS2, where it depends on the model and year it came out, if it will play -R's or +R's or both? Friend of mine has a X-box and his play both, I have a PS2 and it loves +R's and some PS2 I know of plays -R's
