  1. I am thinking about buying the Optorite DD0405 8X8 DVD±RW.
It seems to be a great writer, but is doesn't allow BitSetting. Is this a problem?
    What if I only record dvd-r ?
    I still didn't understand what's the advantage of dvd+r?

    Thanks a lot,
    Yan

  2. 1/ Bitsetting is a problem only if you have certain devices that, either by age or by deliberate design, will refuse to read +R discs without bitsetting. There are not many devices like this, but some do exist. You should find out if your various DVD-ROM drives, setbox DVD players, etc., fall into this category.

2/ DVD+R is a technically superior format. And with -ROM bitsetting, it's actually even more compatible with -R. I always use +R. http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/113

3/ Optorite is not good as a drive overall (not just the whole bitsetting thing)

Just use DVD-R and forget about DVD+R anything.

It's just a greedy corporation unhappy that their format didn't get picked so they decided to go ahead and release DVD+R even though DVD-R was already out and considered the official format.

DVD+R is not better than DVD-R and DVD-R is more compatible than DVD+R with the DVD-ROM bitsetting.

IMHO those who support DVD+R are either a bit insane or got stuck with a DVD+R only drive (one that can't burn DVD-R anything) and therefore must justify their purchase.

I have a combo drive that can burn to DVD-R and DVD+R and I have never used it to burn to DVD+R. Screw Philips. They are a greedy bunch of bastards!

So stick with DVD-R just be sure you use a high quality DVD-R disc like Maxell or Taiyo Yuden.

  4. I'd say dont buy the crappy Optorite, BTC, etc... drives
Those companies can not write a decent firmware to handle all kinda (from Princo to TY) medias

Get a Pioneer or a LiteOn.

I see abig difference in performace between my Pioneer106 and my friends' Nec1300, Lg4040, Optorite201.

BTW I see no compatibility difference between my old DVD+R/W's (bitset) and the DVD-R/W's I burn these days.

DVD-R is cheaper but then you need a good burner to burn cheap medias.
You stop me again whilst I'm walking and I'll cut your fv<king Jacob's off.

    ***yawn,what a bore that was....
if you use a decent brand of dvd-R,or dvd+R,then theres no problems,
i use TY or RITEK dvd-Rs,and use DATASAFE DVD+R,and can get a hell of a lot more +Rs than i can get -R,and they work fine in all players.
in the end its all gonna be bout ££$$.
and at what price the media will fall into, just now, people seem to be buying shite because its cheaper.
and when +DL comes in,and -R DL is still a dream, then you could just wave to the fulciman up above.

I heard good things about optorite. People saying they never had any problems with it. Why don't you like it?

You said LiteOn is good. And I heard bad things about it.

I am about to buy the OptoRite 405...

    I really don't know.

Can't I go with OptoRite as longs as I buy good media? I heard good things about TDKs, RItek Go4s....

The best DVD-R media is Maxell DVD-R discs and Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs. Anything else USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

As for "best" burner if you can't beat PIONEER. Some people are using ProDisc 4x DVD-R discs on the PIONEER to great effect. This is a very cheap DVD-R brand but seems to work OK on only some burners and so far the PIONEER seems to be the one that likes it the most.

For a prolific poster who have been here for a year, I can't believe that you would post this kind of garbage without ANY backup to your assertions. Your "conclusions," if I may call it that, goes against the conclusions of most independent technical comparisons between the two formats, including one cited in this same thread.

It appears that you have some kind of beef against Philips and other "greedy corporations." Your opinions are not helpful to those looking for answers because they don't know. Just by saying that DVD-R is the "official format" is misleading - official format of what? Standardized by whom?

The best thing you can do is get a drive that's capable with -R or +R and do whatever you like. If you want to learn more, I invite you to do some research - it only takes a few minutes with Google and draw your own conclusions. Just ignore the rantings of the uninformed and the unsubstantiated claims that you'll find here and elsewhere.

    Good luck.
