I was able to backup a CAVS SuperCDG DVD disk
www.cavs-usa.com to a DVD+R DL media, using the Sony DRU-700a.

It backup played perfectly in 5 different PC DVD-Rom drives.
However, it's intended target the CAVS-202g Karaoke Player..

    Didn't support it very well.
After multiple tries it finally loaded the disk, and would play some of the songs. However, if you got deep into the song list, and where probably hitting data files there where on the second layer.... no good.

I have read the BitSetting stuff for DVD+R and DVD+RW... Would these also apply to DVD+R DL media? Or am I not experiencing a problem like since it does see the disk "sometimes" and probably just can't handle the double layer recordable...

Any ideas on what I cn do?

Else... Any one to buy the extra $15 disk I have left?

  3. Thanks for the reply...

What are the chances that this will help with the issue I am seeing...

I need to read-up to make sure I can go back to the Sony Firmware if it doesn't solve my problems....

The chipset inside DRU-700A natively supports bitsetting. And since LiteOn made the drive and wrote the firmware with Sony's name for DRU-700A you might as well leave the original "Sony VY02" firmware in place. Also with KProbe v2.1.0 it's very easy to disable DRU-700A's region setting, again without changing the firmware. Here's my original forum with the first experiences using DRU-700A and DL DVD+R's:

  5. Thanks Ed

Its good to hear that Sony didn't screw up the bitsetting capable firmware this time.
(they did it in the DRU120)

  6. Very Very cool... Thank you much.

This is what I get for hanging out in the Tivocommunity.com forums too much... I lose track of the cool tricks to do with new hardware.

  7. I'd steer clear of the VY02 firmware. You're right that it's written by LiteOn and that it's nearly identical to the LiteOn VS01 firmware. But because of Sony's aggressive release timetable, this meant that VY02/VS01 was created way too early. Consequently, both are pretty buggy. I highly recommend flashing your drive to the latest LiteOn 832S firmware (currently VS04) as a result of this.

  8. Update:

My drive came with the VY02 firmware pre-installed.

Using the Lite-On utility to change the Book-Type, fixed my issues.

A newly burned DL disk with BookType set to DVD-ROM, loaded in a heartbeat in the CAVS Karaokee DVD player, and I was able to access all the songs on the disk.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, Now I don't have a reason to return the drive. (I already had a 500u Single Layer burner).

  9. Update...

Sony's new VY05 firmware has bitsetting support ripped out. Sony doesn't wish to support it because it's not a part of the official + standards, and Sony is one of the original founders of +.

So anyway, if you want bitsetting for your DRU-700A, you have three options...

1/ Flash to a LiteOn firmware like VS04. (recommended) The LiteOn firmwares don't have the bitsetting support ripped out.

2/ Flash to a modified VY05 firmware with bitsetting support put back in. (also recommended) This if for people who want to stick with a Sony firmware and not flash to a LiteOn firmware.

3/ Keep using VY02. Considering how buggy VY02 is, I would not recommend this. Go for options 1 or 2.

You can find the firmwares for options 1 & 2 here: http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html

  10. Hmm... Is their a list of what the VY05 fireware fixed?
Sony's website was not very informative other then saying that it works with more blank media.

I am not worried about what media I can burn too, I just want to make sure the disks play in the destination players..

What is the difference between the VS04 LiteOn firmware and the VY05 ?

If sony was part of the + you would think they would want their format to work on more players with out bitsetting and booktype modifications..

    Thanks for the update.

    quick question:
How easy is it to go back and forth between the firmware types.
Say I install the LiteOn, can I then go back to the Sony ? and vice versa?

    Thanks

  11. Now that I have seen the light, and that the Sony 700u is a re-badged SOHW-832s.

I think I may just return the Sony and get the Lite-On which is 50% less then the Sony .... hmmm...
