  1. No problems ever with DVD -> DVDR, but this time I need help.

I have a DVD here and I cannot back it up! It appears to be slightly damaged. Neither my DVD or DVD+RW drive can read past the tiny scratch on the surface.

I tried about every ripping program I can imagine, but no go... Now, the question, is there a possibility to rip it, but stop the process BEFORE the error occurs? The error is located in the credits for the movie, so, if this could be done, I would at least have the movie.

    Any ideas?

Best way I can think of is use DVDDecrypter/SmartRipper to rip just the main movie

Or, you could go buy one of those little machines that is supposed to recover slightly scratched CD/DVD by basically polishing the surface with very mild scratch recovery cream/spray whatever

Thanks for the suggestion, but main movie includes credits..

    @andyp1

Thread has some usefull suggestions and I wouldn't hesitate to use some on my own discs! Problem is, I cannot see WHERE the scratch is.

Well, it could be dust, a smudge... or it might be a scratch. Hard to say.

Cover the entire thing with white toothpaste. I know it sounds silly, but of all the methods it's the one that will do NOTHING to your disc if it's just fine. Rub it in good, let it dry, wipe it off.

    Try it then.

  6. dvdxcopy makes a dvd rescue program.

try washing it with water & pat dry, this usually does it for me.

You could also try washing it with a MILD alcohol solution. By MILD I mean like dilute rubbing alcohol 3:1 with water.

  8. THIS thread too

However, I've tried the toothpaste method on three discs recently with poor results

My best results come from simply washing in luke warm water, then drying.

Gonna give it a try with ISOBuster... Didn't think of that one

If all else fails, there should be a way to rip the DVD up to the credits??? It is for making DiVX/XViD's....

  11. One person suggested using vaseline. Rub a small amount on & then wipe off as much as possible.

    Must be some valuable disk.

You could also buy one of those dvd repair kits that resurface the disc. That is what I did.

I think that was a completley different subject and had something to do with vinyl sheep.

  14. NiGHTCReaTuR,

go to your nearest video chain superstore
and ask if they can fix it for you with their pro resurfacing
equipment. If they know you it should be free, otherwise
    a couple of bucks.

    -edit-

toothpaste and or Vaseline? you gotta be having him on
Scratches are removed only by polishing the surface down to
just below the level of the scratch or filling the surface up.
Polishing is better all round except where there are very large
    cracks.

I've tried it serveral times on different discs and in most cases I found it makes the disc worse than it was.

You can use DVDDecryptor to copy your DVD to the hard disk and then use DVD Shrink create the dvd-r and also to eliminate the credits.

Ycan use the "Ignore Read Errors" option to a fast copy.

In answer to your original question - just use DVDDecrypter and use the 'Mode' option and select 'IFO' and then just deselect the last chapter which is usually the credits.

The ripping will then stop before it gets to the bad bit ...

    I hope this helps...

Just to chime in on my experience with toothpaste, tried it on one really messed up disc, it had swirls and swirls of scratches. I put Mentadent (just the white side) on it, spread it around, took a damp cloth and wipe it down. Then I buffed it with really fine cloth. Now it rips like a charm!

I'm not joking. Plain white toothpaste. Harder to find than you think nowadays. No baking soda, no gel, no whitening, no tartar control. Just plain white paste.

It's like using the DVD repair kits that most of the big name companies sell, only cheaper and minty fresh.

Hey I hadn't thought of that, but yeah UNMIXED Mentadent would work good, I could probably stop buying AIM. ROFL.
