Ok I just got me some Maxell DVD-Rs at Walmart today. AFter burning my first one I noticed about 4 distinct rings on the underside of the disk, like if you burn a disc short how you can tell where the burn stopped. I filled the disk up pretty much but its weird because of the rings. I've never seen anything like this and this is supposed to be top notch media.
Can anyone offer an explanation of this?

Can u post a pic? Could be non uniform dye and that is bad.
I no longer use Maxell - got two bad batches from different
suppliers. Both had errors on the last 15 minutes of the disc
across the entire batch. I've had better with Princo. -
Burning at 8* Z-CLV with my Sony shows three different zones :
- 1° at 4* speed
- 2° at 6* speed
- 3° at 8* speed
4° zone ? no idea -

Maybe its like the previous poster was saying, that he had different zones when the writing speed changed. I wasn't paying attention to the burned but maybe the burning speed dropped a little during it.

Ok heres a scan of it if anyone wants to see, not sure how this is going to look once I post it, but I'm new to scanning and posting pics. You should be able to see what I'm talking about though.

Are you having issues with playback? Does it work in your standalone(s)?
I burn all types of Maxell in 3 different burners and none of them look like that......what burner and firmware are you using? -

KProbe if you have a Lite-On drive but all other error checking software like DVD-Infro-Pro and NERO scandisc usually don't pick up stuff like this even if it affects playback.
nah thats not a blemish, i accidentally put a scuff on the disc. The dye on the discs look flawless. I tried it out and it works great. and to the other poster, my burner only burns up to 4x so thats what I burned it at. I dont think it was multisession. I burned this disk by compressing a dvd9 with instant copy and making an instant copy image. The thing is, ive done numerous movies like this and never seen rings like this. Oh well, I guess i'll try burning another one of these disks and see what happens. Thanks for all the input. -
I guess that's the bottom line....it works.
May I ask what you are burner is? -
its a sony dru-510a, yeah i'm happy as long as it works. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea why it did that. Maybe it was that one DVD or something.
