  1. Ok, I have an older laptop computer that has only a 6.4 gig hard drive in it. The only purpose this pc now serves is to keep the baby happy when we're traveling.

This pc has a dvd rom drive in it, but it's frustrating driving down the road trying to swap out the dvd's.

so, what I would like to do is rip 2 or 3 or those dvd's which I own and fix them to where they will fit on that small hard drive and the baby can just watch the movies off of the hard drive instead. I would like to keep as much quality as possible. This laptop has a 15" screen and usually we keep the video on full screen.

Any suggestions on how to do this and keep it away from svcd or vcd?

dvdshrink creates multiple files and doesn't compress enough for me to get server movies on that small of a space.

    Thanks!

you'd probably be better off converting the dvds to divx or xvid

After ripping your DVD, use Virtual Dub mod to load the video, and use a codec like DivX to save to the hard drive.

Download the movie off Bit Torrent... JUST KIDDING.

Just encode the movie into Divx. Rip with DVDShrink or DVD Decryptor to your hard drive, then follow one of the guides to turn your VOBs into lower bitrate MPEGs or divX or other AVIs. I tried looking for an appropraite guide but could not find one. There are so many, hopefully you will have better luck.

  5. I would try the program Fair Use. Its in thr useful software section. I dont have a dvd player at work and I convert all of my dvds to xvid using this program. Love the results and ease of use. Hope this helps.

Are there any certain programs that are better for encoding with divx?

maybe not "better"...but I've had great success encoding DVDs to Divx with DVDx 2.2, using this guide:

    http://www.dvd-guides.com/guides.php?category=dvdrip&name=divx5

quality of resulting files is very good...

takes a while to complete the process, but the outcome is very much acceptable...
    just a thought
