  1. Lets start with some basics. I have a Toshiba SD-R5002 DVD Burner, I am running Windows XP, and basicly have have been using Nero 6.0.0. The problem is I get to around 70% done in the burning process and its quits! No buffer underrun error, no nothing just gives me a fail error. Here is what I have done so far to try and correct the problem:
1)Uninstalled and reinstalled Nero 6.0. Same result
2)Thought maybe I should update my firm ware. Went to Toshiba.com, got an update for my burner, downloded and tried to install it. When i try to install it i get this error "CD-Drive firmware is NOT need to update firmware". Anybody understand that statement???
3)Friend of mine told me I should try Alchol 120 program to burn my DVD's because you can ignore the errors. Downladed the trial version, installed and burned one DVD just fine. Tried to burn a second DVD and it got to 74% and failed.
    4) I have tried switching media. I have tried 4 different brand's of DVD's and they all have failed.

Does anybody have ANY suggestions of what i could do??? ANY help would be great. You can reach me through email at:

What brands of media have you tried? It could be that you're switching between different forms of shit.

Also, give Recordnow max a try.

Have you installed the updates for Nero?

Are you burning straight from VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS, or are you using Nero Recode to make compliant video files?

Firstly get yourself some DVD RW's so you stop wasting your money, problem sounds like it could be down to your machine specs, or pheraps your DVD burner is not set up for best performance ie slave, master settings, right ide cable..ect.

When i try to install it i get this error "CD-Drive firmware is NOT need to update firmware". Anybody understand that statement???
I think that means the firmware you are trying to install is all ready installed on your drive.

Still sounds like a underburn issue to me,check your settings.

  7. I just went through 4 days of exhaustive troubleshooting for a similar situation myself. All was working, then suddently at around 47% complete it would go no further (even if I left it running overnight). I tried Windows Updates, DVD-R/RW drive firmware updates, a new DVD-R/RW drive, different IDE cables, different IDE setup configurations, etc.

Finally, in the end, I found that Ahead software had updates for my Nero 6.3 to bring it up to version 6.6, after which my situation all worked fine.

  8. Try this and then post back.

    Download DVDecrypter (lastest Version)
    Download DVDShrink (latest Version)

Rip a movie using shrink. Burn the move using dvddecrypter.

    Does it work?

  9. As suggested, get some quality RW disks.

Did it ever work correctly? If so, what has changed? If it never worked, good odds defective drive.

Try burning some small data files to the RW and see if that works.

Also try blowing some compressed air thru the drive to clean the lens, that is if it ever worked at all.

I recently went through similar problems and it all stemmed from the Nero upgrade. I went back to an earlier version of Nero and it solved my problems. At the same time I changed to Adobe Encore and what a difference! If you want way more flexibility in Authoring and way more professional looking DVDs give Encore a try. It has a bit steeper learning curve but is well worth the effort.

  11. A bunch of us at work were having the same problem. Came to the conclusion that is was because of NERO. Either make sure you have ALL the most recent updates or use a different method/program to burn. I am finding great success in using NERO Burning ROM V6.0.0, burning directly the Video_TS folder that it shows when setting up a burn in the DVD menu. I also have had much success in first converting the avi to dvd using DIKO. This program creates the video and audo_ts folders so all you have to do is copy all the files from the video_ts that DIKO created into the video_ts folder on the NERO screen when burning.
