Hi, I got 2 ext hdd: one is USB2.0 & the other FW. Both hdd has a Maxtor maxline +II 250gb in it's casing. The Case is called "Metal Gear Box" which is quite common i believe. Anyway, i am able to preview my video footage thru the ADVC 100 with capturing hdd set as the OS Win XP (fixed) hdd, but not on the other 2 external hdd??? It just froze after a few seconds?? And not in real-time preview as well??!!! So obviously, capturing process is out of the question. I don't what to do, so PLEASE help any1. Thanks in advance...
Things i have tried:
Use Sissandra to do bench mark on the FW hdd and got 26Mb/s, which is good i believe.
Other problems have occured:
Sometime, when trying to previewed with the FW/USB2 ext hdd, then VEGAS video freezes, the ext hdd icon within "My computer" disappear and an error msg pops up (say "Windows -delayed write failed......Pls try to sabve this file elsewhere".)
My Hardwares:
Combo Card (FW/USB2): 2 x VIA chipset (IOC 6212)
External Case for HDD: Metal Gear Box, combo.
My Device Manager:
Disk Drives>Prolific PL3507 Combo Device (1394-ATAPI rev1.10) IEEE1394 SBP2 device.
IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers>VIA Bus Master IDE Controller (Without DMA Settings).
IEEE 1394 bus host controllers>VIA OHCI Compliant iEEE1394 host controller.
Network adapters>1394 net adapter #2.
SBP2 IEEE 1394 devices> SBP2 compliant IEEE 1394 device.
(This only comes on when FW ext hdd is switched ON)
Universal Serial Bus controllers> VIA rev 5 or later USB Universal host controller.
That's all the info i have gather, i hope it helps you guy can give me solution pls.
I read somewhere that i could be something to do with changing the DMA setting for the controller card that feeds the ext hdd, i guess this is the "VIA master bus controller", but i have search with no luck on how 2 change the setting for DMA??
That's where i have reached and luck workable solution to the problem, if any1 can help, much appreciated...
NB: It's strange that only when i want to capture video footage, that's when the "Windows - delayed write failed" occured. I manage to transfer 30+Gb to my USB2.0 ext hdd without any problem????

But i love vegas, i have been using vegas for a while now and everytime it served me well. Pls don't be offended, but i don't think it's the software that causing the problem. It something that slowing my ext hdd access speed, that's why the PREVIEWing mode has a lag time of 2-5secs from real time. But i don't know what/why it's doing that???
I have just done a benchmark test of the 2 hdd:
Win Xp Hdd (fixed) = 25Mb/s
Ext hdd (FW) = 26Mb/s
Ext hdd (USB) = 23Mb/s
and from this forum FAQ, anything over 10Mb/s should be adequate for capturing. -
ok i give a go, but to be honest i have tried alot capturing softwares b4 i saw vegas, and the 2 u recommend i think i have come across DVIO and use but don't like as it doesn't show drop frames value. I don't use vegas for editing, i use TMPGENC to do that, then Dr DivX for Divx Conversion. I use vegas for capturing process only, as it gives me 1:1 quality and will stop capturing if drop frames occur. Drop frames can also be problem for TMPGENC, u can lose sound if it come across drop frame.

well DVapp has a drop frame counter, only time i saw my ADVC-50 drop frames was when my hard drive melted mid-capture
Any app that records a DV stream should just leave it alone - even windows movie maker can record DV unaltered. -
Ok another finding. It seem whenever i switch 1 of 2 ext hdd ON, vegas previewing starts lag in time, and when i switch the ext hdd OFF, it becomes clear/real time again.
